Ibex Sculpt WIP Thread

Hi everyone,

I’m working on a new project and I wanted to do a WIP for it, for once. I’m trying to maximize feedback from others this time.

I’ve settled on the basic pose and gesture. I’ll do a plinth very soon as well.

Here’s the initial mesh and pose. Please feel free to critique!

Very cool…I love the pose of this animal! :+1:

Here’s some more info on the piece.

This is my concept sketch for it. I tried to go other directions than this brute force sort of pose and for a while I was stuck. A happy accident led me to a mix of those other directions and this sketch.

Thx SolidSnakexxx. There’s more to come so stay tuned. I’ll post a muscle study shortly.

Hi again,

Here’s the muscle study. I did this to try to be sure of the major forms before I dive in. Because so many of the forms are a result of the deeper muscles, many of the superficial muscles have been omitted or cut away in areas like the neck.

The front leg there concerns me a bit. Seems a little off, but that didn’t seem as obvious till I did this process. I’ll adjust that in the sculpt now.

And now, it’s on to the sculpt, finally.

always good to see traditional art done beautifully. I will tag this for ref if that’s ok and I really look forward to watching the progression of this piece

Awesome! Great attention to detail. With that preparation your model will be a success. It is always refreshing to see proper work done and not simply a shapeless ZB poly bugger beaten into shape with a crow bar.

Wonderful model and drawings! :+1: :+1: :+1:

LMAO!, Thanks guys. Yes, of course tagging for ref is fine but I think I might tweak the sketch a bit this weekend if I get time. Several things bug me about it.

great work man  :+1:
Pose and sharpness are done very well

Hi again,

I’ve got the major forms roughed in here. So I’ve basically gotten started. I’ve been trying to keep that topology even as well so I think I’m in a good position to continue.

Several friends felt very very strongly that this pose, taken from my original concept above was much more engaging then what I had done up in the muscle study. I agree so I went with it. But I brought that left foreleg into a bend because the way my concept shows it straight back is incorrect. During jumps, and head-butts I guess the forelegs in bovids are always curled to some degree.

Great pose and muscle definition, looking good. :+1:

Hi all, I know I’ve been slow to post. But here’s the latest. This will be the last time I post before I call the sculpt done, but I’m wanting to do a nice render as well, with a fur sim and background, etc.

So regarding this below, I see some big things that need serious attention, and once I’ve hammered those out, I’ll move on to detailing the sculpt.

Thanks everyone for all your input so far. These projects can get protracted and it helps to have other people be interested in what you’re doing.

Splendid pose and very well sculpted. I love it.

Wow, this is really awesome, I can’t keep looking at it.

There is only one little thing that seems not ok though, the left front leg is more smoothed than the rest of the body, and I think that even if the body is a little bit twisted in that direction, we should see some of the muscle fiber at the shoulder level.
But still, I love it man. Great work !!!

Chris it looks amazing. The only thing that confuses my eye is the back legs. It just looks like the animal will surely slid down the rock. There is force in the legs I am not reading it in the feet/hoofs. It’s probably just me

Overall I love the silhouette and dynamics in this piece and I only mention the foot/hoofs thing because the piece is so damn near perfect

Look forward to you next update

Wow! What a brilliant pose! Wonderful! :+1:small_orange_diamond:+1:small_orange_diamond:+1:small_orange_diamond:+1:small_orange_diamond:+1:

I think the pose is looking fine. The point of jumping into an rival
shortly before liftoff.
I guess it could confuse people because the base rock is going downwards
but i think its fine. Great work

This is looking really amazing, well done. The action post is absolutely excellent

Wow, big response! Thanks guys! I’ll work at the back legs issue. I see what you’re all saying there. I’ll have to tinker with that.

As far as the missing detail in the front shoulder, that’s the sort of thing I’m working now. I consider the muscling that does show as we see it now to be the broader forms that I’ll build on as I go on. That’ll be this week.

OK, back to work!

Fantastic work man!

Bravo!
