-- ZBrush to Shockwave 3D .w3d --

Does anyone know a way to export Zbrush models for use
in Macromedia Director?

The current .obj to .w3d doesn’t like the way Zbrush makes
triangles. It seems to make every other triangle inside-out.

I need a solution, anyone have one. BTW: I’m on a MAC and
I’ve spent almost my budget for this project.

I don’t have either in front of me but a program called

crossroads I think…maybe be free or have a free version that might be able to convert from obj to w3d.

also another called quick 3d…might also be able to as well…i believe they have a free or trial version…

you could always try uvmapper and use it to fix normals if that’s what the problem is

or even try exporting as dxf instead of obj…

some suggestions for you to investigate…otherwise I really don’t know off the top of my head what could help ya out here.

Thanks, I looked into crossroads. The link I found was from 1998. The main page was a 404 error. This looks grim. I’ll look into the others.

hey tom,

I had a second to check the save as files in quick 3d…w3d is listed so give it a go!!!

www.quick3d.com

edit…

after typing that, I figured i better check it out, first I went to their site…and see support for w3d is coming soon…having seen it as a save as file…of course i was curious. So i tried it…

sorry to say…support is coming soon!

you could email them i reckon to find out when though.

and a google search on 3d converters or checking out shockwaves site should yield up something you can use.

Yeah, I’ve been googling for converters every day for the
last two weeks. I’ve joined about 4 shockwave forums and
read through many more forums. I’ve even written letters
to MM. Which, as of yet, I have not heard from them.

It appears there is NO support for importing 3d files into
Director MX 2004. The .w3d file must be created by some
other program.

The only programs that I’m aware of are 3DStudios, Maya, XSI,
Lightwave, Polytrans & truespace. All of which are $500+ and
each have their own issues. Not to mention Maya, (I think) is
the only MAC OS X program listed. I do sorta have a pc, but
don’t want to invest BIG $$$ into it for this software.

Thanks for looking into it though.

Carrara will export shockwave files and is availablefor Mac. I’m not sure which earlier versions (the current is 4) support Shockwave export but certainly version 3 did. You may be able to pick up a cheap copy. Or Eovia were doing quite could sidegrade deals.

marcus_civis - Thanks for the info. I’ll check it out.

Have you tried deep exploration? It can convert most formats, and make w3d.

I think you can use Gmax (a free version of 3dsmax - although you may have to use a free trial version of 3dsmax5+) as a middle piece of software to load in your Zbrushed OBJ file. Next you export w3d from Gmax, with preview etc and load into you cast in Director8.5 +.

I haven’t tried it, but that’s what I’d do first.
