zbrush to mixamo via FBX, models polypaint texture is low quality, and normals not...

Hello,
I posted this on Mixamo’s forum and waited a couple of days, but no love… My first post, though I’ve found a lot of useful stuff in the last couple monthssince i started using Zbrush:+1:

I have a multiple subtool model (I have the same problem with a single subtool one as well) that I can get exported from zbrush 4R7 via the Zplugin FBX importexport to load just fine in mixamo with the exception of the textures (an probably normal map, but hard to tell with the quality).

Zbrush process: I create UV maps on each subtool at the models lowest subdivision level. I the create a texture from polypaint at each subtools highest subdivision level (for a higher quality texture), and then create a normal map for each subtool back at the lowest subdivision level for each.

In mixamo the the model has a low quality texture as if the texture was created at the lowest subdivision level.

Have you tried importing your FBX file (that you exported from ZBrush) back into ZBrush? That should at least show you what your texture maps are like that are included in the FBX file. It may be that Mixamo reduces the quality of larger textures for display on the site.

Just re-imported via the FBX Import/Export Zplugin, and it looks good, everything comes back in at the lowest subdivision level, and the textures are good, looked at the Texture maps on each subtool and they are good.

It may be strictly on the Mixamo side? I used the same FBX file into Maya 2016 and did a render and it came out fine(textures and normals both). Perhaps there is some magic combination of settings in the FBX Export Zplugin I can export to get what Miximo is expecting? If anybody is taking their zbrush model in to mixmo successfully i’d love to know your export settings:+1:

I was trying to test out uploading to Mixamo but their server doesn’t seem to be working too well just now. I’m new to Mixamo so don’t know what their requirements are for texture maps. I did upload a character for auto-rigging and it showed up grey even though I did embed a texture file in the FBX. This may be because it was PSD format which they perhaps don’t handle. I’ve yet to try with TIF or JPG etc.

Does your model have polypaint? I did wonder whether Mixamo was showing that instead of your textures. You might try exporting from ZBrush again using TIF or JPG for the textures. Be sure to have the Embed Maps option on.

If I find out more I’ll let you know.

Haven’t gotten it figured out yet, but it is the polypaint at the lowest subdivision level showing up, Also tried an OBJ as well and that didn’t work either…
