Zbrush Smooth tool help!

Hi there,

Fairly new to Zbrush
Started working on a project, used zSpheres to build a mesh
Everything was working great, able to subDivide to level 5, until the SmoothTool started having a cow. It would do the opposite of its purpose, I would get really sharp edges and spikes, hopefully the picture uploads so you can get a visual. Could somebody please help me troubleshoot this problem!?
Would really appreciate it, and really like to keep using zBrush, I love it!

Thanks,

Tyler

I am assuming you are referring the model’s eye area where the topology is all crinkled…
If so, when I see this, it looks to me like you are sculpting with an alpha.
Do you by chance have an alpha assigned to the smoothing brush you have currently selected?
Alphas will modify your current brush to its shape when you sculpt.

The odds are that you switched to ‘Zsub’ (button above z Intensity slider) at one point while holding down ‘Shift’. Hold down ‘Shift’ and make sure it is on ‘Zadd’ and not ‘Zsub’.

It could be he’s holding down the Mac equivalent of the Alt Key which if I remember from ages ago is the Option Key… or something…

Hey thanks a lot you guys, I turned zBrush on today and the smooth tool was working just fine, but I will keep in mind each of those suggestions if the smooth brush ever does the same thing!

I really appreciate the help, and I am sure I will post in the forum again! Thanks

Tyler. It is an error with your tablet typically. If you get this error again try to the mouse and if it works then just unplug your tablet and plug it back in and all should be good to go. If that doesn’t work, restart Zbrush and that should do the trick.

Yeah an error with my tablet makes sense, because 5 minutes in it started acting up again, I then switched back to Zsub which made it work, but then minutes later it would go back, so I would switch back to Zadd and it would work fine, if that makes sense at all?

For example I would use the damien standard brush on default and it would push out the mesh instead of in, and when I would switch to Zsub it would work the way it supposed to on default, but then minutes later I would have to fix it.

I hope that made sense. Anyways I will keep trying to restart Zbrush and or unplug the tablet.

Thanks a lot for the help!
