zbrush render test

I was experimenting with zbrush’s materials and bpr renders and I thought I’d use a model I posted on this forum a fair old while ago, but using the new material I bastardized from a couple of pre-existing materials and the new rendering opportunities in zbrush 4.

I would appreciate any constructive criticisms that might help me improve. I can’t afford a separate rendering program, so I would like my rendering attempts in zbrush 4 to look halfway decent.

So what do you think?

I’m probably posting out into a void of apathy here, (which is fair enough, as there’s no reason why anyone should be particularly interested in what I’m up to,) but here goes anyway!

I finally got hold of photoshop and rendered out numerous render passes, which I then composited in photoshop, following advice in Scott Spencer’s Character Creation book, (which I highly recommend, by the way!) Then I added a layered lens blur using a zbrush depth grab of my sculpt (…that Scott Spencer is a clever bloke!)

I know my model is very mediocre, (if not downright bad in places,) but if anyone would like to comment on the quality (or lack of quality,) of my render, I would greatly appreciate the feedback. Thank you!

Hey…feel free to comment about anything, (even if it’s only to tell me to stop whingeing about not getting any comments!)

It’s lonely here!

Hey, nice render, but regarding the depth pass for lens blur, I suggest merging all the layers and then applying the depth pass on top all of them model+background, you’ll get a smoother transition.

Would you care to share your render setup? Mat+lights?

Would be very interested
Thank you! :+1:

Hurrah…an actual conversation with another user!

As regards my set up, a lot of the stuff I’ve done is based on advice in Scott Spencer’s Character Creation book. I kind of feel cheap posting all that stuff on this thread, because I’m assuming that he would like as many people as possible to buy his book!

(And who can blame him?)

I’m quite happy to talk about other things that don’t relate to the render passes and photoshop compositing though, like the materials and lighting. (Actually, come to think of it, I guess everyone knows about specular passes and all that stuff, I guess I could give a general overview, with more specific stuff about my own ideas I threw into the mix.)

(Bear in mind that I really struggle with the technical stuff and just kind of muddle through it!)

With regard to the lack of lens blur subtlety…I used the depth grab right on top of a flattened composite image, so I don’t think that’s the problem. I probably just overdid it on the radius slider, (which controls the amount of blur!)

Are you still interested, as I know things happen pretty damn fast on this site and there’s always something shiny and new to draw one’s attention?
