Zbrush lags when zoomed in close to a mesh?

Hi! Kinda new here out of both interest and curiosity, and desperation! I’ve finally managed to gain the courage to try and take on Zbrush, but I’m having an annoying problem that I can’t really find anywhere else online.

Basically, whenever I zoom in close to a mesh, created as a tool in draw mode (even if the mesh isn’t subdivided), and I translate the object, CPU usage spikes as high as a whopping 80%. This happens regardless of the complexity or subdivision level of the object. Whether it’s a sphere, a cube, or a complex, human base mesh. I have no idea what’s causing this, cause it’s not happening for my friend, who has similar hardware. Sculpting is still smooth, it’s just the translation when zoomed in closely that’s causing me problems.

I know it’s probably Zbrush and not my system. Every game and every app I’ve ran, including Substance Painter at 4k texture resolution runs without a hitch. I’m always afraid that my CPU isn’t powerful enough, but with an i7-4790 I don’t feel that should be the case, especially when ALL other software runs perfectly.

Any help would be highly appreciated!

My Specs:
Windows 10 Pro x64
CP-750 Combat Power PSU
Intel Core i7-4790 3,6 Ghz (4,0 turbo) Quad Core CPU
MSI Z97 Gaming 5 Motherboard
MSI GTX 1070 8GB OC
12GB DDR3 1333 Mhz RAM
500GB Samsung EVO

Make sure you have multi threading on in your preferences.

What is your document resolution while working?

Have you tried a fresh install and what version are you running?

Multi threading is enabled. I’m running 4R7.

I’ve been experimenting with the document resolution a bit, and playing around with the settings. It seems that the document resolution mostly is the culprit, because once I lower it down, things become a lot smoother. It’s a real shame Zbrush is so reliant of this whole document thing and doesn’t use an actual 3D environment, because I really love its features.

So far I’ve just been sort of working around it, but it is quite annoying to have these slowdowns unless I pick a tiny document resolution that just turns everything into a blurry and aliased mess.

turn on WSize in your document menu, make a new doc, and then store that as your start up doc. Then make sure you’re only using AAHalf if/when you need to. Zbrush shouldn’t be lagging based on document size, at all.

It doesn’t lag when I’m using my 4k monitor at full res, it sure as **** shouldn’t be lagging at lower resolutions.

I had no idea about Wsize! That’s so useful! I can’t believe I didn’t notice that. Unfortunately at 1507x890 I still get slowdowns up close though, regardless of mesh complexity. It’s not unworkable, but it is really annoying, and I know it’s not supposed to happen since it doesn’t for my friend, or any other similar app. It does become unworkable once I subdivide a few times and get up close for details though… Which is a major problem. It’s not my system that’s at fault either, because literally everything else runs like a dream. It’s really weird.

Couldn’t hurt to submit a support ticket. You might have a weird threaded cpu they aren’t accounting for or some other odd thing.

Shouldn’t the i7 4790 just be a common CPU though? I’ve even seen it recommended for Zbrush in some places.

I’m having the same zoom lag problem. I tried beta_channel’s suggestions; they only helped slightly. It’s actually almost impossible to zoom in and maneuver about to do detail work. My work-around right now is to zoom-in from the document (Document<Zoom): Zoomed from here, it doesn’t lag, however, it becomes overly pixelated, which makes it somewhat hard to see detailed work in real-time. Hopefully someone has some suggestions?
