WIP: The Venetian Gondolier

Hi All,

This is the first project for my upcoming character modeling reel, which I’m hoping to have ready by summer. It’s titled ‘The Venetian Gondolier’ - inspired by a trip I took this past summer to backpack across Europe. One of the stops was Venice Italy, and the things I experienced there made a lasting impression on me to say the least.

It’s been a huge learning experience thus far - this was my first character since learning ZBrush. I’m fairly happy with how he’s turned out, still a few areas here and there that bother me, but it’ll have to do for now… on to bigger and better things. He’s not going to be textured or properly lit just yet - I’m gonna try to stay in a modeling mindset and create a few more characters before going back and polishing them off as final portfolio pieces.

Let me know what you think! Dont hold back if you see something you think can be improved. I’m learning more every day and any feedback you can offer will really help out.

Enjoy my work! :+1:

I thought this is actually really interesting and nice model. I love the style and the gondola is really nicely done. My only comment would be the folds around his biceps area. At the current stage, the biceps area feels like its actually filled with a big arm where his arm is actually pretty thin right. So, i think you might want to make bigger folds around that area. But this is just my opinion and i can totally be wrong. I am totally loving the details you have so far and definitely looking forward for more updates. Great work dude!

Looking good, I’m really diggin’ the proportions, and overall gesture. It’s fun, good work

Very good and fantastic work! I want to see texture and final render.

Nice job, eline saglik :+1:

Beautiful! Such a sense of style in this piece. The clothing ‘reads’ very well, even without a texture. A personal preference would be to perhaps reduce the size of the biceps just a touch, i feel that they are a little out of keeping with the rest of the proportions. That said, im a fan of the tiny bicep - huge forearm look so feel free to ignore me.

Great work!

Exceptional, love the style of the character.

nice work.

it’s probabley the angle but the first picture looks like he’s got his shoes mixed up.
left is right and right is left?

Wow! I really like your Super Deformation Mood!!! Fantastic! :+1:  :+1:

wow, great style and approch to what i thought might be a quite ordinary subject. really love your stylized approch to the model. the only crit i have is the seats in the boat. if the seated characters(if you have any planned) are the same scale as the gondolier then their legs and arms are going to be really sqashed. maybe the boat needs to be longer. maybe i have to stop talking and appreciate the modelling which is superb.

Wow! Thanks for the encouraging words everyone. I’m glad you liked it.

fabianloing - The bulges in that part of the arm are supposed to be large biceps, but I guess I didn’t make that clear enough - so I’ll look into it.

strict9 - I think it’s just the angle, but I’ve gotten that comment before, so I’ll look into it a bit more.

henrysouth - Yeah, I did my best to scale the boat to a reasonable size without having it overshadow the gondolier. I’m thinking about having seated characters - but really short and fat so it could work out.

sreilly, Ahmet Arif, Jason Belec, piz, Lloiger - Thank you all very much!

Thanks for looking everyone!

Fantastic character design and cool gondal boat thinger. I can’t wait to see how you will color and render him.
