Hey guys. Just kind getting a better feel for form. I have A LOT of trouble with the female body so if you see anything incorrect please point it out. This is WIP so i haven’t finished and still need to do the hands and feet, but I will take all C&C please. Thanks!
Clintus,
What sorts of references are you working from?
Just some google images of women and then close ups on specific body parts
Clintus,
How much have you studied the underlying bone and muscular structures? what sorts of sources have you used? and which areas are you most happy with so far on this sculpt?
In my experience photographs of real people are a definite help but I’ve found that I need to exploit as many different sources of knowledge as I can while learning anatomy. Books have been crucial for me so far but I found that my understanding improved dramatically after buying and studying a replica human skull and a Freedom of Teach full body human ecorche. They can be quite pricey but being able to cross reference 2d images in books and a physical 3D Freedom of Teach sculpture has helped me learn more quickly than I was when I was only looking at books and photographs.
A bit but admittedly not as much as i should. I have the book Anatomy for the Artist, but i need to look through it more. I think im happiest about the general shape of the thighs and arms. Im least happy with the face. Shes not “hot” enough lol. female faces have always been an issue for me.
Thank you very much for the tips and the resources
How did you make the lips?
I always fail doing lips
I’m working now on a soldier which i’ll post here soon, and to avoid doing lips i’m making some kind of protecting piece of shirt, you know, like an fairly simple gas mask
The previous posters are correct, the best way to get a good feel for form is to work from reference. In this case there are some notable things worth mentioning that may help your progress.
- The calves and feet are too large, its the first thing I noticed. Slim down everything below the knees, particularly the ankles. The calf muscle itself seems too large and masculine, particularly from the front. Overall I think the basic shape is there.
- The thighs. They’re okay, main problem is that they seem masculine. The definition you’ve shown seems pretty much in the right place, but not sleek enough for a female (who’s not a bodybuilder). One thing that I also notice here – the widest point on her legs are halfway down the thighs, where it would be best to locate that on the hip bone about crotch level.v Note between the thighs and calves, the knees are awfully prominent as well.
- the pelvis is too short… measuring from the navel it should be about a head’s height, but its about half that. This is throwing off the proportions quite a bit. the thighs may also be somewhat short as well.
- The butt is pretty tight and flat for a gal. loosen it up, make it a bit larger, and don’t forget to let gravity take effect.
- The torso looks okay, could use some smoothing here, and a little less muscle definition. (make sure you sculpt at low subdiv and don’t divide until you need it for detail). I’m not sold on the shape of the ribcage, might be too large back to front. Also, her breasts are floating, make sure gravity hits them (even if your’re going to sculpt a top later – model them correctly and later move them into position when you do a top) One thing that helps me is to start the breasts much smaller, then adding volume when you’re ready for clothes if necessary
- arms look pretty good, they may be short and a little thick and muscular for a girl once again. The shoulders and clavicle are particularly good here, I think.
- She doesn’t have any shoulder blades. The furthest back area of the torso is the middle of the body in the upper back, due to shoulderblades, muscles, and the natural curve of the spine.
- Hands are just plain enormous looking, and somewhat formless. Next to the face, the hands are the most expressive part of the body, and it’s very noticeable if they are not detailed enough.
- the neck looks good, maybe make it a tiny bit thinner to add a little curve there
- The face / head need some work as you’ve noted. Making a pretty face is not easy – you need to know what to make soft and what to make angular, and how to adjust proportions to get what you want. This is an entire subject or two, so don’t give up. Particularly, it seems to me that you’ve got a very masculine look here (notice a theme… ) It feels much too large, which has to do with body proportion everywhere else as much as the head itself. a) try to get some hair on her – that makes an enormous difference in how a girl looks, and sculpting without it as a reference can be difficult. b) Jaw and chin seem perhaps too prominent, as does the nose. c) ears are pretty big. d) bottom of face seems long. I think the brows and eyes could be shifted down slightly while the mouth/chin could be shifted up.
note it looks like you’re using a cavity material, which tends to amplify angular features. It is very good later to check smoothness, but you’ll probably find it to be more attractive if you used something without cavity shading.
Anyway, good luck
Hey guys i haven’t been working on this project in quite some time, sorry got side-tracked with other stuff. Thank you so much for the feedback oofnish! I really appreciate the outside eye.
Nemes1S: I usually just rough out the shape with claytubes and use the damstandard brush to push the mouth back in and inflate to bring the lips out a little. Adding a sharp edge to the lips with the standard brush (sometimes going just inside of where the edge is negatively works better) usually finishes it off and if any adjustments need to be made i go to a lower sub division level and use the move topological brush.
