What is a good game development software to use?

I’m looking to start developing a game and am looking for a place to start. I’ll be doing all of the work on a OS X 10.5 MAC. I’ve downloaded Unity 2.0 for MAC. They have some good tutorials and a community to ask for help. You can also export your game to web, MAC, PC and iPhone (soon). XSI has a free MOD tool and uses Valve Source engine. Its for PC, so I’d have to run windows to do the work.

What do you think is the best one for learning game development and creating some basic games?

Thanks for any advice.

imo for the mac, unity is best of breed

Unity looks good but I don’t have a mac any longer so I haven’t tried it, but I have used the source engine a little and I found it nice to use with the help of the Noesis advanced level design DVD.

I use Unity and love it.

XNA seems to be popular with the XBox and PS3 developers
