Thank you for posting about this, Coffeecula. I have also experienced a change with the behavior of changing the brush size.
When hitting the S key during a size change, the brush size will increase on its own in some situations.
I am using a Cintiq, my gestures as I work have not changed, and I use the same method of holding S on my keyboard or Spacemouse to change brush sizes on the fly. In this update, the distance my pen is from my Cintiq seems to be incredibly sensitive and if the brush size menu is opened by pushing S, my brush size will change with my pen only hovering close to my screen.s The sensitivity of this is about half an inch or more. There was a level of sensitivity before, but this seems much stronger to the point where moving my cursor to another part of the model will yield undesirable and sudden brush size changes. It’s a bit jarring and not sure if my hardware is just broken or if it is genuinely from this update.
An example. Drop a sphere, scale it up a bit and brush size change over one part of the model. Cool. Now moving the cursor to another part of the model, hit S to change the brush size, and boom, the size will be altered to something different. This is different from the projection of the brush, the actual size is changing by 3.0 to 7.00+ values that make judgement of brush size alterations difficult to gauge and interact with. Previously, the brush size value would not change no matter where you were on the model until the user altered it. Now, the brush size is changing without me sliding the slider at all.
Happy to demo if needed. A bit weird to describe this problem, but it is noticeable and a bit frustrating when the workflow doesn’t feel as fluid as it did before.
BIG THINK:
So going back on this a bit and checking how I work. I traditionally TAP “S” on my keyboard to bring up the brush size. HOLDING “S” on the other hand IS much better, though I just now discovered how fluid that is. The problem I also see is how I use the Spacemouse or other hardware to control the usage of this keybind, which follows the same idea of pressing the shortcut, and does not respond to holding down the key. So if using my spacemouse for brush size changes, the problem described above will occur because the “S” key is not being held continuously. The sensitivity of reading the pen input from the screen distance does seem much higher though because moving to another part of the model and tapping “S” will change the brush size even if my pen is only a good distance from the surface of the tablet device.
Same issue here. Pretty annoying to be honest.
It is working although you need to be very precise while clicking the slider.
I hope this will be fixed in the next patch.
Hi everyone,
The new S key behavior has been improved to be much faster, while still allowing for legacy behavior. The behavior changes depending on how you interact with the S key.
In previous versions of the program, you would tap S and bring up a slider that would stick to the canvas unless you moved away, or clicked on on the slider to drag it left or right. You can still use the slider in this fashion. If you give the S key a quick tap, it will bring up a slider that will stick to the canvas, and you can press down and drag on the slider for more precision if you choose.
What you can also do now, is to press and hold the S key, and simply hover a pen or move the mouse left or right, and then release the key for a much faster, simpler brush resizing.
At any time, you can still press down and drag on the slider for more control.
If this is not your experience, please head over to Pixologic Support and start a conversation there.
Thank you!
Thank you for responding Spyndel. Reading your reply and a little more experimentation I was able to work through this change.
As a long time user, this new behavior is a bit jarring. Tapping S and hover dragging is the main issue. Because this new system seems to be listening for a hover command all the time, and I may not have my pen directly over the manipulator, or my hand moved slightly, the brush will change size because it thinks I made a hover value selection. Previously, this value was locked until it received direct input from the pen instead of what appears to now be listening for constant hover input.
The new method works great with my Cintiq binding the keystroke to a function. Works great with my keyboard, obviously. Not fully functional on a Spacemouse unfortunately. I use an Enterprise and binding one of their number keys to “S” presents the current tapping problem. As a solution, binding the actual integration of “Draw Size” to a button does allow for Legacy behavior of the size manipulator. Would love to see this made into a possibility as the smoothness of changing the brush size on the fly is a huge improvement, not to mention the Spacemouse integration is fantastic and saves my wrist!
Thanks again for explanation of the new integration.
Hi Firebert,
We are currently working on a solution that we hope will resolve your issue.
Thank you for your patience!
I prefer the old method, it is very strange to have to hold the S to change the brush size. It would be interesting to add an option just to “hang” in the old method. I know that there is still the old method, but now it is very sensitive, it does not “lock” the command.
There is a 2021.6.1 update which enables a preference to effectively disable the new feature. Read the 2021.6.1 Notes here
Nice solution! Thank you guys for hearing us on this one and pushing an update so quickly.
