viewport navigation

Hello. Is there any way to track zoom or tumble the viewport without moving the cursor to a blank area of the canvas or outside of the canvas? If there isn’t, can I submit this as a feature request? I find this slows down me down a lot. I’d like to use even bigger canvases than I am, but it becomes more and more difficult to position/orient the model- forcing me to move the pen from the centre of the screen all the way to the edge of the canvas.

I know this seems a bit nit-picky with such a great software, but I do notice this a lot! (I’ll just shut up if there already is a way to do this!)

Thanks!

Allan

You could try Svengali’s Axis plugin. it has 6 buttons you can use to quickly snap it to top, bottom front back left right.

I know it’s not much different at the moment than dragging outside the model but I find it a quick way to move around my model. If ya wanna try it the link is in my sig.

I haven’t looked at the hotkeys so don’t know if there is similar hot keys for that or not.

Thanks, but that doesn’t really help. I’m wondering if I’m explaining this properly, or maybe I’m missing something. It seems like the only way to rotate or pan the view is to move the pen ALL the way to the side of the document (while I’m zoomed way in and the model fills the document). Unless I’m missing something this seems a bit inefficient… no? It’d be great to just map a button so that when depressed you’re in view manip mode - is this possible?

Thanks,
Allan

ok i got ya…good question. since i just use the axis buttons to snap it to views it’s been along times since I have tried to rotate with my pen at such close up range.

I am not sure if the spin plugin leaves it where you stop it, and editable…that might be worth a look…i will test it out soon as i get a chance.

i think too if you check out the quicklinks link i put in my sig there is a link to the hotkeys pdf which may or maynot have what you are looking for…i tend not to use em…save a few necessary ones so can’t say for sure.

actually if no is the answer it would be a good idea for a script to be able to use arrow keys to rotate while in such close up modes.

hope something here helps, if not sure Aurick the Master of Z will hop on by and let us have it!

Hi Allen,

One quick, simple thing you might do:

On the right hand shelf are several manipulation icons: Scale, Rotate, Spin, Move. Any time you need to, you can tear these off and Control-drop them anywhere near the center of your canvas using the Control key. They’re remain-on-top-buttons that can be Control-repositioned as needed. In fact, when you tear them off they can be “ganged”, 2x2 or 4x1, and dragged as a group (click and drag using the colortab on top of the gang.)

When you’re done, Control-drag them individually back onto the shelf, or - if you are using a custom layout - just click the custom button on the top row to restore the interface.

I absolutely agree with the opener of this post. Zbrush needs a navigation like Mudbox, Max or Maya, where you can rotate, zoom and pan at the press of a button. WITHOUT any popup menus. And WITHOUT taking the cursor off your model.
Turning on Top Popup Transform is an interesting alternative to standard navigation, but still stupid. I really don’t get it. I never will.

Please everybody who is with me, mail to the support for improvement of this shameful feature… but be nice
