Tribute to Ron Mueck

cool sculpt and shading! i’m starting too with the vray sss2 any info, tips or settings you used would be very usefull.

excellent!
i immediately recognise the inspiration of ron mueck, i saw an exposition
of his works 2 years ago, it’s really good job

great work! nice shaders

congrats

Thanks for the nice words. I will post a little bit of the workflow later.

Here is another lighting test. The idea is to have that mask hanging on a wall. The way you can see Ron´s sculpture in a museum ;) ;) I just don´t like, that the diffuse light, bouncing off the white walls are killing all the specular hilights. So I need to figure out a better light setting for a situation like that. [

I guess you dont know how many time spends mental ray’s fast sss skin compare with vray engine

Comebacks in broken english, priceless. I’m kidding

Grugi: I think your right, the GI is really washing out your acute detailing. Maybe just try lower the intensity of your light to get less bounce, and/or two lights on either side of your model. It’s looking great, gj:+1:

looks pretty good to me. The skin looks awesome

yeah this lighting really makes the eyes come to life.

It’s terrific! It is of the Ron Mueck self-portrait if I’m not mistaken. Ron’s stuff is giant sized, fiberglass / resin sculptures. He’s most famous for the giant infant sculpture installation art. I want to save up and buy a Mueck some time in my life, just park it in the foyer under the vaulted ceiling, let it peek out the upstairs windows and scare the neighbors.

Great job, great render, great subject matter! :+1:

ooooooh. this is looking nice. i love how bold and soft it is. great WIP. cant wait for finished product.

Glad you like it so far, still a long way to go …

Did a first test for the beard. I´ve used Hair&Fur in 3dsmax. There are some pretty hard transitions which I want to fix, but overall I think it doesn´t look too bad.[

Looks great besides the hard transitions

Nice. Looks a lot like the original too. cool model and cool renders.

:+1:

Another test. I´ve worked a bit more on the overall shape of the model, tweaked the texture, shader and lighting. But I still need more color variations in the maps.

There is a lack of specularity in most places, having some trouble with my hdri reflection, but I will fix it soon. For now I was trying to get the sss shader looking good. And still, he needs some eyebrows, beard and hair ;) [![render5.jpg|960x1280](upload://zgLEACwg6tJK1IzKRh3Hwq2E1Jo.jpeg)][](http://javascript%3Cb%3E%3C/b%3E:zb_insimg%28%27194966%27,%27render5.jpg%27,1,0%29)

you’re getting spot on my friend. I love it. I hope you maybe take on some of his other pieces too. he might be interested to see it.

Thanks Framedworld

I think I´m getting closer, still a lot to fix ,though. Tweaked the lighting/shading and made a few steps towards the painted silicon mask look, I want to achieve.

I know the look you are going for but in my opinion you actually had it nailed down really well in post “1 Week Ago 02:16 AM - I didn´t like the last light setting so much, so I went back to my first setup and try to improve that…”

Everything so far has been a step back in my eyes. The bump is less pronounced, I guess since you are going for the soft latex feel, but the lighting as lost appeal and feels rather bland now. The post I referred to above I thought you had actually nailed down a good shader with only minor tweaks necessary.

It’s your work, goes without saying, so you know what you are aiming for but that’s just from my perspective. I would guess you’ve stared at it for too long and instead of improving it you’ve gone backwards a bit.

You’re a good artist, keep it up and maybe just take a step back for a while and work on something else, then come back to this and maybe you’ll have a fresh perspective.

this is looking great!
Ron’s sculpt was made in fibreglass btw, looks the same as his silicone ones though,
well done :+1:

I like this mask (or face?) pretty much! it has a lot of character and reminds me of tf2 scout somehow :)))
