Texture stroke too pixelated?

I made my own 500x500 texture in order to stamp it repeatedly on this fish model.

The texture file looks like this:

I also made an alpha for it that looks like this:

Keep in mind the actual files are TIF files. The above images are PNG’s.

When I try paint it onto the model using DragRect or Dragdot or anything else, it comes out too pixelated. Keep in mind the texture map for the entire fish is 4096x4096. Also, it comes out somewhat transparent.

Looks like this:

My co-worker who’s pretty good with ZBrush couldn’t find an answer. She suggested increasing the file size of the blue dot but it didn’t really help much. She also suggested trying spotlight instead but it yields pretty much the same result minus the transparency problem.

I’d really appreciate the help. Thank you.

My guess you are using polypaint. Even you have UVs and a texture map polypaint will ignore both and only will use the polygon density, that needs to be increased to achieve what you want. The transparency is related to the RGB intensity of your tool or to the fade effect of the tool that you are using, that can be changed with the focal shift.

Thanks. That helped.

I’m just disappointed that it’s based on the polygon density rather than the actual texture map. I had to turn up the SDiv pretty high just to make it look good.

You can always discard the higher subs after you have saved out the textures.
