Texture error!

Hi, I’ve got quite a problem with making textures in Zbrush. Most of the time everything works great, yet sometimes the UV’s seem to be rather messed up.
This is the third time i worked hard on a model and when i would start texturing with texture master, only a quarter of the texture map is being textured, the rest remains in the initial color. When i export it to 3D Max, the texture aligns properly, yet you see alot of edges because of this error, making the texture worthless.

I thought it could be something with resetting the texture to a higher resolution, but after a few tests, this didnt seem to make a difference.

This is how the texture looks, all the little squares are textured, yet mysteriously the rest stays in the initial dark brown color.

Does anyone know how to fix this, if so, please help!

Thanks in advance!

The rest is staying the initial color because that part of the map is outside the UV borders. This is not an error; it’s how UV’s work.

There are several things that you need to consider here.

First: Before assigning your map, create a blank texture of the size that you want. ZBrush calculates the UV’s based on the size of the currently-assigned texture. Deciding to change the map size after you have done the UV mapping can cause seams.

Second: Make sure that your rendering engine is not using MIP-mapping or texture anti-aliasing. Both of these can cause the UV borders to bleed, creating seams.

Third: Try pressing Tool>Texture>Fix Seams before you export the model. This will paint a buffer around each UV edge, which will usually remove the seams.

Fourth: Try using the adjustment options in the Tool>Texture menu. It may be that your rendering engine reads the UV’s slightly differently, and so an offset of + or - .05 may be needed in the horizontal and/or the vertical direction to synchronize them. Once you know the right setting for your rendering engine, you can use it with all of your maps.

Fifth: All of this has been talked about here many times before. Using ZBrushCentral’s search feature can save you a lot of time and give detailed answers – perhaps even one for your specific engine.
