SOLUTION: startup - crashes & ATHLON 64

Hi I was having a lot of trouble with zbrush, it would frequently crash on the startup screen and often throw me out at random times during modeling. After some emailing to zbrush tech support they suggested the following -

"Could you check if you have Data Execution Prevention turned on for applications? If you do, could you turn it off and try ZBrush3 again?

To do this, you go to Start/My Computer and right click and select Properties. You go to the Advanced tab, choose the Performance section Settings button and then the Data Execution Prevention tab. Make sure “( )Turn on DEP for all programs and services except those I select” is off."

Followed their advice and now the program is running very well. Starts up every time.

Hope this is useful if anyone else if having similar issues with their zbrush on an athlon 64 machine.

Cheers (and thanks again to zbrush support - excellent job guys)

im having the same problem, but when i went to change what you said to, it was already on the right setting and im still getting the crashes :S

Same for me as for 666filth.

But thanks for posting

I have a native man dancing around a camp fire with a chicken.

He wishes Zbrush 3 good tidings and no evil spirits.

Been working great ever since.

Was going to post it earlier, but ya I wanted to beta test him for awhile to make sure he was the cause.

your suggesting we should aquire native men for zbrush to work?

666filth: What are your system specs, and what are your settings in the Preferences>Mem menu?

im using an Athlon 64 X2, 2x 7900gtx and 2g of ocz ram.
and well i cant even get into the program now to tell you what the mem settings are :S

Not sure if this will fix it, but have you tried running the vcredist_x86.exe found in the ZBrush3\Troubleshoot Help folder?

ahh awesome it seems to be working now, thanks very much Aurick

well neither of those make it for me. I get random crashes at startup 90% of the times, but when I restart, it’s fine.

Note this happens to me with every single machine i use Zbrush in. I’ll post the specs for all of them, they are so different it’s ridiculous.

Dell Inspiron 9400 - Intel T2400 / Geforce Go 7900 / 2GB RAM / XP 32 Pro

AMD Athlon X2 4200+ / Geforce 7900 GTX / 4 GB OCZ RAM / XP 32 Pro

AMD Athlon X2 3800+ / Geforce 8800 GT / 2 GB RAM / XP 64 Pro

Thanks for support guys.

Hi!

I also had systematic crashes on Zbrush 3.1 startup, but pretty random as well.
I could start Zbrush 10 times and would still crash, but then the next morning it would open without a problem…
It’s strange because I never had this kind of trouble before I reinstalled windows, so I thought it could be something I forgot to install…

Anyway, after trying all the solutions listed above, I thought it could be related to the athlon x2 processor, so I installed the AMD Dual-Core Optimizer and it started without crashing (so far :stuck_out_tongue: )

Hope this helps

specs:
amd athlon x2 4200+
2GB ram
windows xp sp2
geforce 7800GT
compact mem 1000
maxpolypermesh 6

Installing the dual core optimizer fixed it for me. Now I can finally get to work. Thanks guys.

aw… well at least I can load zbrush and start getting to work. However zbrush crashes randomly while I sculp :frowning:

Are you right-clicking on the canvas? There’s a known issue concerning this that can cause crashes. Also, don’t use Ctrl+S to save. Instead, actually click the Tool>Save As button. Or better yet, use Projection Master’s save feature.

dont think so… It just crashed again when I was trying to mask part of the geometry…

Stupid question:
Have you tried with other tools? sometimes “corrupted” tools with incorrect vertices (not properly welded) make ZB crash when masking/hiding
Try with demo soldier just to be sure for example

Thank you guys big time! Zbrush 3.1 crashing on our PCs (Athlon 64 x2 4400/3700 with 4 gigs and ATI 3600 series 512mb) since we switched to XP pro x64 SP2 (to take advantage of x64).

When I disabled the Data Execution Prev. some programs not runing at first and windows adding them to it’s list on there automatically.

Thanks again - you saved me from working with Mudbox :stuck_out_tongue:
