Smoothing normals?

Hello! How does one go about smoothing the normals on an imported object in zbrush?

Also was wondering… when i divide a mesh with open holes, the mesh shrinks…how can I avoid this? Just close the holes before importing it?

Thanks.

Steve

Either that or add some geometry around the holes that will pin the edges in place when the mesh is smoothed.

awesome, any idea how to smooth the normals?

You subdivide your tool, then generate the normals from the lowest SD level.

Im not trying to be rude, but if you were unaware of this process you really should be viewing the introduction to Z-Brush videos and PDF tutorials. I especially recommendQuickStartSculptingPolymesh_WEB.pdf`, which can be downloaded from:-

http://www.pixologic.com/zbrush/education/documentation/guides.php

Its in thesculpting-polymesh.zip` file.

Cheers,

Well I don’t mean to be rude, but you obviously don’t know what I’m talking about.

these are normals. there is a smooth operation in maya, max and any other 3d application to soften them so as not to appear sharp. I guess you can’t have smoothing groups in zbrush.

Im sorry you thought I was being sarcastic. When I said I didnt mean to be rude that is precisely what I meant. Belittling beginners isn`t my game.

The new and more informed answer to your question is this:-

Tools/Display Properties/DSmooth.

Rack this number up and you get the perceived smoothing effect present in all standard 3D packages.

Best of luck with this and with reading the very useful and well designed help files.

I tried that already…hmm do you have to change this value before you draw the tool on the canvas?

The smooth slider has no effect if the object is in “quick” mode. It’s next to the edit button above the viewport and to the left.

Turn off Quick 3D Edit (found on the top shelf and in the Transform palette), then set Tool>Display Properties>DSmooth to 1.

This will work on an object that has already been drawn provided that the gyro is active or the model is in Edit mode.
