Smooth tool with high-res mesh

I´ve just started using Zbrush and I have already found a problem with my workflow, or with any workflow I guess. The smooth tool is very important ofcourse, but if the mesh is divided to many times It doesn´t work anymore. At 0,5 mil polys it smoothes very little (100% Z intensity) and it takes years to do one single detail. At 1 mil polys it doesn´t smooth at all, I can brush in a minute and nothing happens.

Now I´ve used the search function on the forum and the only solution to this problem I´ve found is that you have to move down to a lower res and then smooth. Isn´t there any other solution? If you´r working with small details and want to smooth you can´t move down to a lower res couse then the details wont show at all.

And hide all but the area of the mesh you are working on doesn´t work very well either.

Within Transform>Modifiers you will find the SmoothingCurve. Adjusting this curve to fill more of the graph will increase the strength of the smoothing brush.

In the middle of one of the dvd tutorials ( Mr. Alvarez from Gnomon).
What he does is lower the subdivion level until the smooth brush works
effectively.
Have tried it and it seems to work.
Don’t forget to lower the intensity of the brush :you could end up
smoothing that which you don’t want in a few strokes.

Right, thanks guys. I´ll see if it works.

Hi guys, I tested all your ideas a little bit more yesterday and I came up with this. At 0.5 mil polys I can smooth a bit and it´s enough to smooth small details. At 2 mil polys I can´t smooth at all, when I click my mousebutton the brush just stops and cant move…

But I came up with another problem instead. When I had been working on my 2 mil poly model for about 2 min and was about to push shift+D Zbrush just died. I got a warning that said I had to low memory… but damn´it I have 2GB RAM!..

Please see the FAQ>General section of ZBC. Look for the subject on Performance Tips. This should help you.

I´ll do that, thanks

At higher subdivision levels smoothing is difficult to accomplish. if you need to
drop down a few levels and smooth the area, step up one by one smoothign each as you go. When you get to a point the smoothing brush no longer works (be sure to max the curve as mentioned before) drop the object to the canvas and use the smooth brush in Projection master.

you can also mask part of the model and use the Smooth slider under tools.

I wrote this for you…

it´s a Strongest smoother script… (work with selections masks!!)

Notes:

  1. For correct undo, be sure to Make a morph target before.
  2. if ZScript - SHOW ACTIONS is turned on, you need turn it OFF and press ZScript - RELOAD! for speed reasons!Sorry for this! It´s my very first script!

Enjoy…
