Smooth normals without smoothing the border for vector displacement

Hi!

I am trying to bake a vector displacement map of a deformed plane (it has open edges).
Enabling the vdSNormal setting smoothes the normals, which is nice, but ZBrush seems to smooth the edge normals so the vector displacement gets a border. Disabling the vdSNormal setting gives faceted displacement.

Is there any way to get a vector displacement map with smooth normals that doesn’t have a broken edge?

With an open surface you will run into edge issue if the smoothing is not doing the same to the UVs in your rendering application. What are you rendering with?

You can try creasing the border edges but there will still be scenarios where you may see some border edges if the UV border doesn’t match up.

Hi Paul!

I thought my problem wasn’t solved, but re-reading your answer I hadn’t thought about the UVs being changed on export. The problem wasn’t actually with the SNormals, but with the SUV. Disabling that option fixed the problem for me completely and the Map came out as I wanted. No distortion on the edges.

(I am rendering with Cinema4D/Redshift btw.)

Thank you so much for your help!
