Skull Island - like matte painting attempt

Hi,

I’ve started work on a personal project for a matte painting (my very first one) with 3d, 2d and photo elements.

The theme is influenced by King Kong’s Skull Island.

Base models done in XSI, some rough sculpting in Mudbox and final detailing and passes rendering in ZBrush.

Later on, lots of tweaking and paint over of the rendered elements and the photo reference in Photoshop.

A couple of additional elements were done with Particle Illusion.

Here are a few images of some rocks renders and a wip version of the compositing.

As always, comments and critique are welcome

and you call it “a little attempt??”

Man this is great! i like all of it from details to colors!!

Maybe a more intresting camera angle will help(i’m thinking to give more relevance at the “skull stairs” ), but its just my opininion…

Good work!

Glad you like it so far
in its full resolution (4000 width) i can still see all the badly done details and have to fix all of them lol
i’ll keep in mind your suggestion, thank you

Awesome work, and excellent use of Zbrush. This looks like it would make a beautiful deathmatch arena in Unreal tournament 3.

Start to come out very nice.

yeah, it would be fun to make a level for UT with this concept
