Shawn Ray, Bodybuilder

outstanding stuff …

Cool work man :+1:

Continuously outstanding work, but as I mentioned before the facial likeness is not quite there. I met Shawn a few times at Gold’s Venice when I lived in LA and while you are close on the body, the face is just not him. Just my two cents.

Keep up the great work!

Cheers!

awsome work dude its beautiful.
but i think that there is something in the face that makes it less similar to shawn ray face.

and also i think that you did the back a bit smaller than the real one.

besides that your work is perfect

Thank you very much all!

brettSinclair: Hey thank’s man! Ya I need a wacom …

Etcher: Yhank’s man! Yeah great idea for the scketbook. But for now I’m preparing a making of my arnold shwarzenegger.

The Runner: I did use reflection, no specular at all, and there is juste 3 maps for the moment, displacment, diffuse and bump. more to come, I will add details in the bump map and maybe add a cavity map for some reliefs… I will see. I need to finish the diffuse first, there is some seams to fix, like on the trapezius, head… The teeths are custom texture made. Nothing too complex but with epidermal and subdermal scatter map. I need to fix the shadow problem I have on the teeths, not too much apparent but enought to require a fix, will be fixed soon.

scottleroc: the veins are like that, I mean, not exactly at the perfection lol but kind of like that, I will post ref soon.

Kosher: lol He as a wife, so sorry lol

omnimorphic: have you seen the teeth of my hulk, they are the same, with the same shaders, but I modify a bit the modeling. Go to check them on the hulk thread, you will see it depends of the lighthing I use. If you have a pic with the same kind of lighthing as I have(kind of contrasted lighthing) I will be glad to look at it and make modification if needed.

highlander_72 and benwin21 : For the face, I have the eyesbrows to modify to match more his , that gonna help, but the problem is the lack of good ref… small pics or not in the same expression etc, so I do what I can with what I have, if I had clean ref, it will be a lot easier.

So by the way, did you meet him in contest shape? Super ripped ? or in off season? because de face change a lot!! In the off season, they do water retention and have more fat and in contest shape they ahve no water retention and they have 2 % bodyfat…

For the back, I will show ref, it depend on wich pose he’s doing, now he’s doind a side triceps shot(almost in a front show but still a side triceps) and it’s sure that if you coupare his back when he do this pose compared at when he’s doing a rear lat spread, that’s sure it will be less wide, it’s not the same pose. but I think I close to what he must look like in this pose, I had already had a little with to his lat, but I did it on the base mesh in max, so it doesn’t appear in the z-brush screen capture. You will see when I will do some render. But shawn ray did not have a huge back as Ronnie or Keven Levrone or Yates.

So, next update will be fixed seams and added details in the bump map in some area and maybe a render of the upper body, but he’s really not finished yet, the longer part is the head and neck, after that done, the rest will be fast, especially for the legs but I have to finished to model them before …

So, I’ll be back

Probably the best that I have seen here, great work

It would be nice to have a look at your max render settings. if possible.
again truly inspiring

Wow! This is an amazing piece of work! (Especially since you created it without a Wacom tablet!) I can’t wait to see what else you do.

Superb modeling bro

Looks great. The face is a bit off TBH, It does look like a white dude, not quite Shawn Ray. I think it might be the eyes, but I understand its hard to find face shots of bodybuilders, nobody cares about the face lol. It would be cool to see the flat top on him also lol, but up to you if you think its worth the effort.

If you’re gonna make another bodybuilder, Coleman, Yates or Columbu doing a lat spread would be sweet.

I think I’m tired of seeing body builders- but your execution is amazing. I think the impressive thing to me- even though the concept is a little lacking… the technique and skill shown is so impressive. So- 5 stars from me- I wish I could do work this well.

Craig

Looks really good.
Just think muscles need some more separation and pop
Your lacking depth and separation that bodybuilders are all about.

excellent work :+1:

Big guns: I know, not having clean refs makes things really hard.
I’ve met Shawn in various differing “shapes”, but mostly when he was there for a photoshoot, ergo in close to contest shape. lol In offseason some of them are really hardly recognizable. Most of them wont even show in Gold’s Venice unless they look good. It’s a real zoo at that place and all about appearances.

Shawn’s face just looks a lot more chiseled than what you have now. Maybe that helps a little.

Keep up the great work!

Cheers!

wow ! excellent work :+1: :+1: :+1:

The sculpt is looking really good. I have one issue that I have consistently seen in all your work. The flow of the muscle of the deltoids are wrong. You have them flowing evenly into the upper arm. Below is a picture of Shawn that I have drawn a few lines showing the proper flow of the muscle strands.

Other than that, I think your sculpts look great!shawnray2.jpg

Tony has a great point. the muscles of the deltoid aren’t perfectly striated like a pumpkin, which is a mistake a lot of people make when sculpting that area.

And why is Shawn wearing pink shorts??

I think if you looked that jacked, nobody’s gonna mess with you no matter what color you shorts are.

I agree, something does look a little off in the upper arm area. Nice work though. Worthy of the top row.

Agreed. This is looking great. That’s why I give it five stars.

…is this guy exists in reality! :grimacing:
Cool result! :+1:

Thanks’ all!

Tonysculptor: you notice a great point, I see that my front delt don’t meet the biceps at the right place, but for the flow of the fiber, I’m not sure of your drawing, or maybe I don’t understand it well, so I join a pic to show you the three part of the delt: front, side and rear so by the main time, it show the right direction of the fibers. I will do some ajustement on where the delt attach and on some volumes.

And here is some pics I have as ref of shawn ray, as you can see, his skin tone is not that black compared to a white guy. And I have to modify the eyebrows .

arff, sorry ofr the size… I will reput bigger, for now xs host seems to be down so I upload it with imageshack but he reduce the pic

hightlander_72: I will add some details in the face and I change the eyebrows, that gonna help.
