selecting edges in zmodeler

I’m totally new to Zbrush ( but have been doing 3d cg for decades with Maya, Max, Blender, etc. ) and have been learning, focusing first on the Zmodeler brush. Not sure where to post newbie questions and looking at the forum this seemed like the most likely place.

I’m trying to build a specific building from photo reference using zmodeler. At the moment I want to make a window with an arched top in a wall.

There are things I’m having trouble with.

  1. Symmetry doesn’t seem to work while using the Zmodeler brush.
  2. I can’t figure out how to select specific sets of points or edges.
  3. I can’t figure out how to constrain movement to a particular axis.

I’ve watched the zmodeler videos and am still having trouble. As I said, I’m completely new to Zbrush. So I haven’t fully groked the new style of workflow yet.

Hi Dumiatis,

Welcome to ZBrushing. I think once you get the hang of things you will love it. As for you current questions;

Symmetry should work with ZModeler once you turn symmetry on. The keyboard shortcut in the X key which activates symmetry. In the Transform pallet you can change the axis you want the symmetry to act on.

To select points or edges your brush needs to be hovering over a point or edge. Then you can either right click to reveal options or hit the spacebar to reveal them.

If you want to constrain to an axis one way you can do this is to mask what you want to affect and invert the mask and switch to the move transform and draw out an action line. Once you have an action line you can click on any one of the red, green or blue circles to snap the action line to an axis then hold shift and drag the center (white) circle on the action line in the direction you wish to go. Holding Shift constrains the movement to that axis.

I hope this helps.
