Sage Dragon concept

Hello everyone.

I would like to share the progress of a concept development and modeling of a fantasy character with you.

Naturally I am fishing for some C&C. After all the synergy radiating from this forum is mesmerizing.

And I would like to thank you for visiting my first thread.

Cheers.

In addition to Zbrush, so far Maya and Photoshop are being used.

BTW It is being developed for an animated folk story.

Very nice detailing Ejder. The wrinkles the colors you used fit perfect the character. One thing that it could be worked a little bit more, would be the mouth. I think the teeth need a litte bit more of work and detailing.

Good work! Would be nice to see the whole body!!

Javi.

Hi Javi,

You are right I still have to figure out the final form of his teeth. After all, they will play big part in projecting the complex personality of this character. This mouth has to put some fear into hearts but also be source of wisdom.

In this story, He won’t be tearing any flesh, but shaking some sense into whom deserves it.

Here is a one of the initial ball point pen concept sketch I did, which I am trying to tone down that fierce look.

Here is an early PhotoShop colored version of the same sketch. But later, I thought sage-green, as a base skin color would be more fitting. I am glad you liked it.

Except the general sense of his form nothing is finalized yet.

Thank you for your comments, Javi.

So, I am thinking that his teeth should be somehow like dolphin’s teeth. If you do not pay attention to them, all you see is that enigmatic smile. But when you decide to check the detail, my my … so many of them

Looks great! I would recommend Killer Whale teeth though as they are a little thicker and can be used to show less agression as you suggest, until the right moment…

Right on! Jason. Thank you for the suggestion.

Trying to picture it. Yes! If my memory serves me right, they are in yellowish tint turning brownish towards the roots with slight inward curve.

Wait… they might be my mother in law’s.

Besides it’s more suitable reference when you consider the scale of the character. You nailed the quasi image I had.

Thanks again for your comment.

yay, ejder, nice dynamic head:+1: I Like it well…welcome here:sunglasses:

Hello Abyssis,

Thank you for your comment and warm welcome. The congregation of talent here never seizes to amaze me. It is humbling but also inspirational experience.

Cheers!

Hey Edjer,

Great work mate! It bears some similarities to a Skexis from The Dark Crystal. Those things really scared me as a kid…oh wait…they still scare me

Keep up the good work

Cheers

Ben

Great reference Jason. Seeing how the upper and lower teeth set relative to each other in a closed mouth position is priceless. I also found some reference photos of performing whales, They also have pretty interesting tongue which I might fashion the dragon’s one after.

I very much appreciate your help. Thank you.

Ben, gollum thank you for your positive comments, guys! Ben, I am not familiar with The Dark Crystal. But since you mention it I got curious, I will try to find some info about it.

No problem ejder!!

I think you’re a good story teller. hehehe! You know how to give a nice description or the story about the dragon.

And also your sketch painted in photoshop wow! very nice!!
I have a question in regard to that. How do you prefer to paint in photoshop? By lowering the opasity? or by using a pallet with enough colors to mix? Another thing is, how many layers you use? or what workflow you use when painting in photoshop?

Ok Ejder have a good one!

Javi.

Real nice! Welcome on board the board.

awesome dude.-

Seems like this is the direction I am going with the dragon’s teeth. I might play with the translucency to get a softer feel.

Moochie, El mexikano thank you guys.

Hey Javi thanks again! What I know about PhotoShop is limited to some rudimentary techniques, which I do not follow consistently. That’s being said, here is a quick simple sketch with layers to give you some idea.

I’m glad to see more dragon work coming out on the forum. I really like the dirrection your going with it, being a sage implies a certain age/calmness while being a dragon is intelligent/powerful/viscious. Looking good, cool post dude. Makes me think of me of the skeksis from the dark crystal, you could use that for reference, especial skeksil http://habidabad.com/images/skeksil_2b.JPG

p.

Pestopants,

You are right on the mark with your sage dragon character profile.

Since, this is second time the skeksis character has been brought up, I assume that makes it an industry common knowledge, which I claimed to not know anything about. I am afraid that statement puts me between a rock and hard place. I either come across as an ignorant or a phony. I guess I have to go with the first option. Anyways…

Thank you for your comments also for the dark crystal link. But for now I will keep clear of anything related to it.

BTW I love pesto!
