Request for DVD by Miguel Ortega Underworld Evolution modeller

Hi Fellow Zbrushers. After reading the New Site / New Demo Reel UnderWorld Evolutions thread I sent Miguel an e-mail asking if he was planning on releasing a tutorial DVD on using Maya and Zbrush to achieve this amazing work.

I think maybe a show of hands might prompt something to be done. Lets keep our fingers crossed

So we better get emailing then…

Would like to see also.

Would like to point out that there are two dvds
now out that deal with Zbrush and Maya.

Zbrush Production Pipeline
by Meats Meir ( meant for all 3d packages but fortunately
he uses Maya)

Head Sculpting and Texturing
by Alex Alvarez
(Althought mainly about head texturing, as he goes along he
creates the various maps and prepares them for export and use
in Maya.Although not meant to be Maya specific, if you have it
it is a bonus)

I’ve seen the Head modelling one and it was great. I didn’t watch the Meats Meir one because I find he has a very specific style that would be of no use to me. Don’t get me wrong, he is one talented man. I just want to create monsters for VFX film

Understood! :+1:

Luck to you and the artist!

the zack petroc dvd should be more than enough to be honest. you dont have to follow his exact methods, but something along the lines will give you the exact same results.
heres some of his work.

thanks for the kind words guys…lets see what happens…

you make a good point Ambient-whisper…however I would like to make another…

every artist does things a little differently, in the major 3d programs one could argue slight differences in modeling or edgelooping techniques etc but still basically the same.

I agree there, til we come to zbrush. Since zbrush offers such a diverse way of doing anything I find it invaluable to see anything that offers a different approach. Much as I do watching a myriad of sculpters approaching a lump of clay to say re-create David. What works in z for one dude might not for another. Same as with clay. We all need someone to introduce us to techniques and while blind to form in learning that…they guide us there as well. So for me anyway…any class or video that offers insights to different ways to use the tools available to everyone, offers us more insight and methods to accomplish our own visions and find our own voices. The more one knows the more creative one can become in finding one’s own way. mho anyways.

good points also. but i guess what i was hinting at was that id rather see varied dvds, instead of 20 modelling dvds with some very slight changes because artist B used tool x to achieve something instead of tool z.
if the artist was to tackle a completely different area than organic modelling or even using zbrush for hard surface!( or focus on areas of organic modelling that other dvds dont cover, then great!.), but if it would just once again be a dvd on starting a model from zspheres, or a low model in another app and finish in Z, then theres almost nothing new to introduce into the mix. unless the artist shows a number of great tricks with projection master, or some really neat alpha tricks, etc. id personally rather see somethings that are a bit less common. how about a dvd that focuses on the full procedure to texture a full model between zbrush and photoshop. i dont think theres one of those yet.

hehe amen to that one!

If i were to make a DVD the focus would be on things I learned while using it in a production enviroment.
Alot was learned using it for a film, ther was alot of questions we needed to answer ourselves.

i agree that some dvds might be repeating the same lecture over and over but if i were to approach modeling it would be a beginning to end process of setting the topology for transformations, making a character in 2 seperate states, e.g; an old man and a 4 armed creature, showing the considerations taken for effective animation, texturing him using Zapplink and hand painting techniques. Specifically talking about the different Maps needed for realistic results, for example Spec maps, Bump Maps etc. many which are never discussed but super important. Making realistic skin shaders in maya and rendering them in Mental Ray to look as good as they did in Zbrush. and lastly showing the process of Blendshapes, Corrective Blendshapes and animated blendshapes. again all comig back into maya. Ideally working with a rigger throught the entire process of the DVD showing the making of a rig that utilizes Zbrush’s power.

anyways im rambling…

anyways . thanks again for the request
M

I for one can’t wait for this. I find that I learn exponentially from DVD’s like this. By the way…any plans on re-coding that plugin at your website for version 7 of maya. Can you post any wire frames for us or is it all proprietary?
Non the less…CAN’T WAIT!!!

yes that would be really helpfull to finally see a dvd that takes to the whole process from modelling, to texturing, to animating to rendering :+1:
