Question regarding zbrush layers

Hi guys I’m just wondering does zbrush layers feature only works at one subdivion level? so say if I have a model that’s in sub lvl 3 right now and I have created a layer, when I go into sub lvl4 or higher I can’t create anymore layers?

any info would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

That’s correct. There are technical reasons behind it, but layers are only possible at a single subdivision level. They can’t be edited across multiple levels, and they can’t be created for more than a single level.

thanks for the reply, okay I can live with that, but say if I have 4 layers in sub 3 is there anyway I can make them permanent merged to the mesh and clear out the layers so when I go to sub 4 I can have new layers again?

Thanks

Deleting a layer while it is visible and with a layer instensity smaller or greater than 0 will merge that layer with the base geometry of the current subdivision level. A layer intensity of 0 is the same as if the layer was disabled.

So, if you have a layer at subdivision level 3 go to subdivision level 3 and select the layer. Then make sure it is enabled before deleting it. If you have more layers do the same.

Similarly you can delete a layer and it’s geometry modifications completely by selecting the layer and turning off it’s visibility before deleting.

ah Thanks TVeyes, how come I never thought of that :stuck_out_tongue:

"so say if I have a model that’s in sub lvl 3 right now and I have created a layer, when I go into sub lvl4 or higher I can’t create anymore layers? "

I am not sure If aurick’s answer is completely true, or I have misunderstood.

To answer that question , you actually can make a new layer in level 4 , what you have to do is go to layer 3 and click on it once, you will notice that the layer tab upper shadow goes off (not the eye icon). Now you can go to level 4 and make a new layer.
Hope its clear , if not please let me know.

The layers you add are sub division specific. At times the NEW layer button will be ghost out and you can not add more layers. What Ive come to find out is to create a new layer, delete it, NEW layers button not ghost out no more and then you can add more layers! Yes, a little workaround glitch of favor.

What I want to find out is if you can some how merge your layers to one and make a 3D output off your consolidated layers. I dont know if there is a plugin or workaround methods to get the similar result but any input will definitely aid to the one posting this response.

Thanks a head of time.

Adding sculpting Layers are subdivision specific. And at times, the NEW Layers button will be ghost out and you can not add new sculpting layers in other subdivision levels. What Ive come to find; if you add in a new layer on a working subdivision level, delete it, then subdivide to your liking, your NEW Layer button is active and you can now add more layers to other subdivision levels. A nice glitch of favor.

What I want to know is if you can merge your layers to one and make a new 3D sub-tool off of your consolidated layers?

— I have multiple layers that made an appealing result but must have all layers visible to attain that final desire. Any layer turned off in visibility, my results will be incomplete.

I got ideas as far as Making A 3D subtool of each layer and projecting the work to one model but thats some extra work. Might even require retopology work if layers make drastic deformation segues.

Always looking for faster and effective methods so…

If there is a plugin or workaround method to provide similar results, you may aid one that wrote in this response. Writing a plugin in addition to sculpting Layer palette with freedom of merging multiple layers…that would be VERY convenient.

Thanks a head of time.

Lol! thats what I get for posting without reading it all…Canndis and TVeyes got it covered. To maintain working layers----Just save your base ZTL prior to deleting layers in another saved ZTL version and call it a day!

Touché.

THANK YOU TVeyes for your input…it was immediately acknowledged.
