Problems with Slice Curve

Hi there,

i wonder if some kind hearted ZBrush Guru can give me some advice please?

I have a new mesh I extracted from an arm where I want to practice making bandages/wraps. but when I tried to use the Slice Curve brush, I get this mess in the mesh.

First picture is of the mesh before. Second picture is just after I tried the Slice Curve(any combination of CTRL+Shift does the same kind of thing)

Hi!

Can you verify for me that you are in fact using the Slice Curv brush, and not the Trim Curv, or the Clip curv?

The slice curve brush should only slice the polygons and affect polygrouping, and not deform the mesh in any way. Those other two brushes will, though.

Dear Spyndel,

Thank you so much for your reply. I made sure that I am using the slice curve brush. Unfortunately I can’t hold CTRL+SHIFT and press SHIFT+SCREENPRT to take a screen shot. So I have the screenshot at the point just before I click on the SliceCurve to select it (just before I get the message that it will be selected when I hold CTRL+SHIFT as in the image below)

Here is the screen grab where I am about to select the brush. I got red squares around the brush I am selecting.

Pleas e allow me to give some more details…

  1. When I export this mesh as an OBJ and then import it again, I do not experience this problem when I want to slice it. However, with this imported OBJ my computer lags a LOT. Plus, it is then a struggle to try and get it the right size and to fit onto my model (or should I rather say the right placement back on the arm where it came from).

  2. As soon as I save it as a new tool, and bring it back in. The problem is back

  3. When I practice this method on another model downloaded free from Cults3D, I can follow the tutorial without any mishaps. I am adding the tutorial that I save the image of below.

Thanks again for your help
Kind Regazrds,
Théo.

Zbrush version and OS?

Assuming the brush works as expected on other tools, and considering the strange behavior with the import/export, I’d say something was odd about the mesh extract you created. I couldn’t say what. I’d have to know more about how it was created (in your program, not the tutorial).

As you can see I’m not having any issues with a vaguely similar extract:

Looking back at your screenshot, its hard to tell what I’m looking at. It seems to me maybe you have some overlapping meshes there. The tutorial directs you to set a thickness of Zero, so you should only have one surface.

How many polygons does it have? Is it possible you have overlapping duplicate meshes causing odd behavior? Can you re-create the extract after deleting the existing masking and re-applying it in a slightly different manner, and see if the issue persists?

If I can ass something else here (not sure if this will give some more details) is that I get this error when I went to Subtool -> Remesh

As I am still learning Zbrush, I do not really understand what this message means.

Kind Regards,
Théo

If this is related to your tutorial, the tutorial doesn’t call for that function. It calls for aMesh Extraction with zero thickness–make sure you understand the functionality there–and then the use of ZRemesher.

If you’re getting error messages associated with that subtool, it’s just more evidence something is odd about it.

Dear Spyndel,

I had a look through some of your suggestions and still have no joy in trying to sort out this weirdness. Would it be possible to upload it to a Google Drive and maybe have you have a quick look at the original model? I just started to click stuff like Close Holes, Dynamesh etc, but as I know, this really doesn’t always help because you spin off in directions that is not related to the issue (if that makes sense?).

Thank you
Théo

Sorry, I also meant to say that on other models it seems to work fine. This model was ‘built’ with Human ZBuilder V2 and then I ‘exported’ or grabbed the model from ZBuilder.

Thanks,
Théo.

Sorry for all the Spam, but I tried pretty much any of the pre-loaded Zbrush Meshes and they seem to work fine.

This poor guy I sliced up in bits with no issue LOL

So my Model/Mesh is a bit … uhm… daft/weird/odd :face_with_raised_eyebrow:

Thanks
Théo

No worries. Everyone gets a little manic when learning a new tool and having to deal with lots of new information. I’d be happy to take a look at your .ztl if you wanted to upload it.
