Anyways, the sprues for the conversion head bits and the minotaur’s sword were modeled in MOI3d, the heads, the preta, and the minotaur were almost entirely done in Zbrush, cleaned up in MeshLab, and finally printed using PrintAPart.com

These masters were cleaned up, baked for several hours to remove the support wax, and then soaked in Rubbing Alcohol and Goo B Gone. They were sent to my caster, who used a LTV silicone mold rubber to make the master mold.

They look great! I am very happy with them, and with several successes under my belt, I can now feel confident in finishing my other figures.

They look like a good job. They are the right size to be printed without being painful. I’m having trouble justifying printing any more of my figures @ 1/4 scale during our “economic downturn”.

The most expensive one was the minotaur, costing $90 at printapart.com, and he stands a hair under 2" tall.

Ive been very interested in doing this myself lately. I tried sculpting some small bits and pieces out of sculpy and plasticard, which came out somewhat ok. Without all the proper mold making equipment it just ended up a big mess.

So you say you had them printed at Printapart.com, how do you determine the scale at which your models print at? I mainly use max and zbrush so would scaling my models to an inch/centimeter scale apply?

I would also be interested in your mold making and casting process. Is there somewhere online that can create my molds for me?

Also how much would you say the process cost from start to final casted figure?

STL Files are unitless, so if you scale a fig to be ‘2’ tall, and upload the file to printpart, printapart will ask you if you mean “2 inches” or “2 cm” or “2 feet”.

Cost wise, figs will be under a $1 a piece for raw metal. If you only have a few figs, the masters can share a master mold.

Partial master mold costs ~$90, production mold ~$90.
