OK, now for the billion dollar question. Will the undo button ever be fixed?

Since v2 I’ve never been able to get the undo button to stay in a saved config. Each new version I try to put the undo button in one of the shelves, but it never works for long & is gone every time I restart. It can’t just be me coz it’s happened in several versions and on several computers. Is there a way to get the undo button on screen all the time and not have to go hunting through menus? Or is it just an unfixable bug? (I do get that we can now slide the undo time line back, but I’d rather the undo button would hang around!)

Thanks for reading.

Well, when you restart, unless you open a file which has undo history; There is nothing to undo, hence missing button
My peeve is the setting for LightBox Open at Launch :frowning:

Did you try saving a startup document that has an undo history?

I couldn’t get Active points/Total points to stay in a shelf until I saved a startup doc with a tool in edit mode on the canvas.
Now it’s there every time I start zbrush. Perhaps the undo button would behave the same way.

Yeah, I fixed this with a startup script, but it was driving me nuts.

I was referring to when you save as with a name after customizing. I went one better and customized my UI  once you are familiar with the software(and how it works), these things aren’t a problem  You can find mine in my uploaded files.

The Undo button probably gets lost from a custom UI because its name changes depending on how many undos there are. The solution is to use a macro like the attached file. You can then make the macro button part of your UI and press that. It should persist between sessions without problems.

Save this file to your ZBrush /ZStartup/Macros/Misc folder and press Macro>Reload All Macros.

Thanks for the replies guys, much appreciated. I have a saved config file with the undo & redo buttons on the left shelf, but each time I restart certain buttons are missing, the biggest of which is the undo. There is always a blank space where I’d left it. Sometimes it will spontaneously disappear after a long session. I’ll try the script Marcus, many thanks for providing it. If it works you become my hero and I’ll need a photo so I can turn it into a huge poster for my wall!
I’ll report back!

Hmmm… That didn’t work. I guess there isn’t a way to do it, but I wonder if anyone else has ever managed o have an undo button on their desktop without it disappearing? Given the way ZBRUSH is so customisable I would’ve thought an undo would be one of the first things people would want handy, or maybbe I jest makes more mistaykes than most

Well I makes TONS of mistakes :p… but to be honest, ever since I learned that “cmd/cntrl-z” = undo and “cmd/cntrl-shift-z” = redo back in the 1980s, I don’t think I’ve ever clicked on an undo button in ANY program. My left hand is always right there.

undo, cut, copy, paste - z, x, c, v

It doesn’t get much handier than that for me.

If there’s nothing to UNDO, there may not be a button. Tool in Edit mode(look in the text file posted above). Fresh restart of program unless opening a file won’t have a tool in edit mode

If the macro I posted didn’t work then you’ve not installed correctly. It works fine for me and stays put on my interface.Undo-button.jpg

It should show as marcus says it will. I also have a button to undo all, but it stops after 5 undos(as coded)

Darn! I installed it as you said, seems pretty hard to get wrong, but I’ll try it again. As I said, the button just disappears while I’m working. I put it there, save the config file, but within an hour or two - working on the same tool mind you, and always with lots of undo levels, it’s gone! The “redo” button stays, but the undo always disappears! I can’t believe I’m the only one this happens to! It’s been the same across 3 computers & three versions! It can’t just be me!!!

You might do better to create and save a clone of your tool and modify it rather than building up a great deal of undo history. You can save the project with history, it greatly increases file size though. You can load the file without the history if you like. Try to keep your projects organized(Subtools, etc) it will help you.

It sounds as though you are still using the original Undo button in your custom interface. The macro creates a new Undo button which you’ll find in the Macro>Macros>Misc sub-palette. That’s the one you need to use on your interface, otherwise you’ll not experience any difference. I’ve not provided a macro button for Redo but I will do so.

Edit: have added Redo macro to my post above.

Sorry Marcus, I didn’t get that there was a new button, thank you so much for all your work, and not just on this problem, your solutions to Zbrush problems are legendary and much appreciated by all of us Z-lovers. I can’t wait to try out the button properly, but it still leaves me puzzled. Am I really the only one for whom this happens? Surely there are others who’ve added ‘undo’ to the UI? I’ve changed the UI quite a bit coz I’m unable to use a keyboard as easily as most, but surely I’m not the only one for whom this has happened? If you’re curious, enable customise, then add the undo to the tray, now work as normal for a couple hours. Is the undo still there? I’d love to know.
And thanks again MC!
