Normal Map Resolution Problem

Hi guys! I’m pretty new to zbrush and am working on getting the workflow down. I’m having a problem with the resolution of the normal maps on my model. They look so-so when the model is far away but at closer resolutions they look horrible. I’m using zBrush to create the maps and Maya to render. What is the right workflow for creating high quality maps and working with them in zbrush to maya?

Right now this is the workflow I used to create the above:

  1. Go to subdiv level 2
  2. Normal Map >> Tangent, Adaptive, SmoothUV, SNormal >> Create Normal Map, Clone Normal Map
  3. Texture >> Flip V >> Export
  4. Import into Maya, smooth UVs, increase resolution of model, set up subdivisions at render time, render with mental ray

For some reason when I tried to create a normal map at anything higher than 2 the map is completely blue with no detail. What do you use to create your maps? zBrush, topogun, Maya, etc? Thanks so much for the help!
