Newbie first retopo.

Hi all!

So I want to learn to do retopo.

I made this Alien dude with quite a lot of detail just to have something

to practice retopo on, this is how it turned out.

I would appreciate it if you guys could take a look and see if i´m on the right track on this retopo thing. Is the flow ok? Could I have made it different?

Every tip is most welcome.

and yea your edgeflow looks fine- seems like u pulled it off nicely. i think the problem with the back is that theres not enough polys in that one spot to project the details right… the deformed polys are right over the point with 5 intersecting lines, that should usually be avoided, especially when u have details everywhere. you can always sculpt that new mesh, and retopologize again. You can even decimate ur model a few times, sculpt some new details and then retopologize http://www.pixologic.com/zbrush/features/decimation/

Unfortunately the decimation master is not working in 3.5.

hehe was my pleasure – yea they havent updated decimation master for 3.5… its the only thing i use 3.1 for now! its definitely worth taking the model into 3.1 for that powerful feature though… picture being a modeler at a videogame studio, and the game engine programmer says ‘hey modeler!! i need this boss model to have 14% less polys!’ decimated by 14%, DONE.

I accidently trashed my 3.1 when I needed to reinstall 3.5…
I have read about the decimation master and it seems really great.
Hope all plugins well be updated soon as I miss a couple of other great ones.

Edit:
Just checked your vids. That pumpkin looked like a lot of work!
I wonder what the deal about “all quads” is all about. I managed to get like
only one triangle on my alien because I’ve heard that quads the thing.
On your pumpkin I saw you draw quite a few.
Can you explain this quad idea?

The retopo is too far away from the bottom of that crease. You could try moving the points closer or increasing the strength of the Influence… or something like that in the retopology section of the tool menu.
