New 3D printer: Formlabs Form 1 samples

I have been a lurker on the forum for several years now and I have been very impressed with Zbrush as a tool. i have been using it for specialized product development components that would be impossible to model with traditional CAD tools. I’m even teaching my kids how to using it…

I have recently purchased a Formlabs 3d printer and I am posting an open invite on the forum to anyone interested in having their models printed. I would be willing to print them at the cost of the resin, shipping charges plus 10% for my time. No additional parts or models would be printed without owners consent, just one and done.

I’m not running a business and I’m not looking spam the forum, I just wanted to get the word out and maybe give a bit back to the community.

The quality of the prints and surface finish is very good. Please contact me with any questions.

Detail looks good. Is there a solid grey resin you can print with? It’s hard to see the build lines, if any, on the 3d print when the resin is transparent.

At medium resolution, .05mm, no stepping lines are visible in the clear material. There is some very subtle steeping visible if you look across the top of a part on large, smooth surfaces. It is very minimal, nowhere close to what you get with a Makerbot or another FDM machine. I have some parts running now at .025mm resolution, I’ll see what I get.

it was going to ship with solid grey resin… then they switched it at the last minute to clear, unfortunately.

yeah I heard they had some issues with the grey resin.

But i gotta say, what i’ve seen from it so far on sites and videos, is of much better quality than the other 3d printers in its price range. And the process itself looks cool too

Gunze 1200 surface primer is your best friend then. Anything else from Michael’s or Lowe’s is just crap, gets too grainy. They are hard to find though, especially in a spray can.

That’s pretty damn good. Just wished the build platform was a little bigger. Maybe they’ll do that for Form 2!

In the first three days I have made 3 successful prints. (2.5 hours a piece) The original model was made in Softimage, imported into Zbrush as OBJ, then exported STL to the Form-1. The pipeline has been quick as well as painless. I’m very pleased so far. Zbrush seems to be ideally suited for the task. Next, I’ll be exploring highly textured surfaces where I expect it to excel. This model was completely smooth and will require very little clean up to make it look nice. The lightning cable was included in picture to show scale.

Oh it is good and good post for other user.

I’m also experimenting the Form1 on my free time. I’m very pleased with my first test even if the support management need some time to learn

Hi,

thank you for the nice photo and friendly support offered to print out some samples.

I like to send you few Stl. files of small objects/samples to be printed out in clear resin, and cover the cost for it.
The points of interest are quality of finished models and print time for full build try, how many models could be place and printed at once.

Thank you in advance and hope to receive your soon reply.

Best regards

Tonci

are you still offering this service?
