I started this from Z sphere first time. I’ll try to get it better detail.

This is a masterful reproduction of Michelangelo’s head. Really well done. However, utilizing such a model (the David) as a reference for human anatomy study might not be such a good idea. Michelangelo employed a lot of foreshortening and other “tricks” to make the figure convey what he wanted at such an enormous scale. David shrunk down to the size of normal male would have made a very sadly deformed specimen. Modern anatamy study tools like CAT scans and documented cadaver dissections might prove more accurate.

I am not surprised to see this level of craftsmanship after seeing your ZB sculpt. Yes all of Michelangelos techniques are worth carfule study. M. made careful study of many corpses as well, he knew exactly what he wanted to express and how he wanted to go about it. Not much room for changing your mind with marble. No question he took liberties with preportions, what is important is to know how he did and whether we want to do the same in our own projects. If David had been in normal proprtions he would not of been as powerful even in his enormous size, from the viewers perspective just under and infront of him. I have always admired MBF’s choices in his Pieta, St Peter’s. She is much larger then the grown man she cradles in her lap. She is also about the age Michelangelo’s mother was when she died. Yet it works because she is young and pure in our minds. You will see just the opposite juxtiposition of size when you observe Jesus and Mary at the center of Michelangelo’s “The Last Judgement.” I am only a seedling of a sculptor, and for this artist it is "The Last Judgement,’ that I learn the most from. I could stare at it for hours. Actually I have stared at the best books I could afford on the subject. Even though the torsos are all so simular, or maybe because they are so simular I can concentraite on the expresion and body language, and the individual stories playing out on that emense canvas. Davide you must very much enjoyed do this bust.
Davide, do you see your self sculpting most of your future projects in ZBrush or something simular before commiting to clay? I am sculpting for the Garage Kit Market, Monsters and such. Later on a medeavel chess set.
Thanks Stephen Casey. I think I’ll be making my projects in ZB rather than clay. I still like to use caly once a while because I developed my fundamental modeling skills in traditional sculpture and learned a lots about human anatomy. I definately don’t wanna lose that.
Imagine what he could have done with ZBrush! Or Leonardo. Or (my personal favorite) Brancusi!
Davide, I hope I didn’t sound discouraging. You’re skills are undeniable, and whatever means you use to improve them is alright in my book.
Keep on going exploring the human anatomy! Discover where a muscle needs power (and special where not). Keep in mind where the bones are not covered by muscles.
Yes a lot of clay artist are going strictly digital. That is where most of the work is, by a huge margin. Good luck in it. Images of your clay works wil speak loudly when included in your resume.
David is that NSP Chevant? I have only worked in polymers, Premo mostly. But do not rule out anything.
EmptyFull, do you have a particular favorite of Brancusi?
Bernini’s 'Ecstacy of St. Theresa of Avila" is the sculpture I find my mind returning to quite often. Perhaps some day I will get to see it in person.
With ease and speed of modern tools such as ZBrush it may be difficult to identify the great masters of our own time.
Hi Stephen- It’s hard to pick a favorite. I do think the “Bird in Space” series is very cool. though. (Sorry for the weak pic)
