Mask pen default sharpness / blur / smoothness acting weird.

Hello people , I’m new to Zbrush and this forum as well. I’m working on a simple model . I save my work as a zbrush file side by side (not tool ) . In one file , my mask pen is acting weird. When I use my moues / pen-tablet for masking , it is very blurry and ineffective. But when I use rectangular mask clip tool , it works fine and I get a nice sharp mask. How do I fix this?
All the subtools in that file have this issue.
I can’t attach images I guess because I am new to the community .Sorry if I break any rules or something.

What I’m trying to say is this :

Same file different tool :

New file , how I wish mask pen tool to work :

I’ve tried setting my tablet options to default under preferences and for mask pen brush settings. Thanks for help in advance

Hold Ctrl and check that the RGB Intensity is set to 100 (for the MaskPen). If this is set lower then the mask won’t be as intense. You could also try pressing the Reset All Brushes button at the bottom of the Brush palette.

Thanks for replying Marcus .
RGB intensity is set to 100 for maskpen . I’ve tried resetting brushes but no use .
The mask is happening in a weird way . If I overlap mask on existing masked area ,the mask in that area kind of shifts . It’s hard to explain .

I can’t think of what else might be causing it. If you can upload the project file to Dropbox or somewhere I can take a look for you.

Thank you so much , that would be awesome .
The sole purpose of my query is understanding the problem and finding out its solution . It’s not something that might be too important to fix as I can export the tools to other file and continue my work but I’m just curious .

Does Grd under PolyPaint affect masking? If so maybe that’s it. Is it enabled?

Many thanks for the file. I found what was wrong. It’s the Gradient button at the top of the Color palette (or under the Color selector on the left of the standard UI). Turn off Gradient and all will be well. (I never use Gradient and didn’t realise it affected masking!)

EDIT: It’s also to do with the alternative color you have selected. If this is black/white then it doesn’t matter if Gradient is on, masking will be as expected. But if a different color is selected, such as blue, then masking is affected when Gradient is on. Strange!

Doug - you were close!

thank you so much doug and marcus for helping me … it works now  Sorry for being late. Great community . Cheers to you guys !
