I’m in the process of studying the male anatomy with zbrush. I have done this before in clay and parts of the body (head, forearm, and foot) in blender. My goal is to have a full colored model, posed and rendered in XSI. It will hopefully look like a cross between The Freedom of Teach anatomy sculpture and the plastinated corpses at the BodyWorlds exhibit. I’m not quite sure how to approach modeling the striations, I’m not familar with the deco brush, and the type of alpha that would work. Or if stencilling will work better. I’m not finished with modelling the basic forms of all of the muscles yet.
looks like youve got a good start on this womball, I think the deco brush is probably easier than using the stencil. I like using the Deco Brush with the alpha from Rimassons Artist in Action. If you do a search you can find a script that will make the alpha for you then you just have to export it out.
the only critque i have is that the pectoralis minor looks like its coming from the sternum rather than the clavicle. could just be the shader though.
The Pectoralis Minor lies beneath the Pectoralis Major and shouldnt be seen at all, so he’s not far off. The Pectoralis Major does have clavicular and sternal origins so although its still a bit lumpy in places the anatomy is actually pretty close through the chest.
Also, I agree, the Body Worlds exhibits were amazing. Anyone who has a chance to see them should do it if its in your city. I spent hours and hours doing drawings from them
oh ok i think the anatomy book I have is labeled wrong im just refering to the top lobes of the pec they just need to be more clearly defined at teh base of the clavicle. I had never seen the Freedom of Teach model I wish i had money so i could get one.

I really want one of these, but they are pretty expensive. I may end up just ordering the chart though. I’m studying anguyen’s model as well, I’m not sure how to make the recesses that deep though. He gets very nice shadows with his model.
Some updates to the head using a masking technique to achieve sharper muscle edges. I have started to figure out how to use the deco brush. It seem like a horizontal striation texture could be used to create striations than can contour around the extremeties.
Getting there. Almost done forming all of the muscles. I am going to be gone for aweek for vacation.
Is the bumps too much? I’m not going to render in zbrush for the final render since I want HDR lighting and area lights.
I think its a good update. I would say I think you should take the time to actully make all the striations rather than just using this bump. it looks like you just used noise or something.
I intend too. I’m just not sure what type of meat I need an image of for the bump map. The muscles do look like they are made out of meat and the striations kind of wiggle a bit. As for color I may have to use meat images as well. What I really am not sure about is if I should model the surface veins. Some aren’t that easy to get references for and I’m not sure if they are arteries or veins.
The anatomy is looking pretty good there Womball. I personally think the bump is just a little too severe but I think the texture will make a big difference and once rendered it will likely be not so apparent.
Those anatomy statuettes are really cool, I want one too
Keep this man away from vinegar and lemon juice!
Things that might help.
On the back view the scapula should be visible, especially in a pose like this. Check the connections of the rear deltoid to the top of the scapula as well.
On the front, the seperation between the Abs and the External Oblique seems to be a bit too deep. Could be the shader though.
Also, on a flayed figure I would expect to see more protrusions from the bone. They seem to be getting lost a bit too much, especially through the hips.
In general, if you want to REALLY push this I would begin to study the origins and insertions of each major muscle and whether the muscles lie beneath or over other muscles. There seems to be a feel of skin on this figure and I think youre going to have get some really hard edges to start seperating the muscles.
I’m back. I will start up on the corrections and more progress tonight.
Preliminary color test, plus some more work on the muscles. They are really visiblie now generally. I use this cavity shader to bring out the muscles more. They are a bit less severe than this, but still severe. I will make the colors less uniform later, but I want to finish up the basic parts first. Like overall muscles attachments and basic coloring. And I want to do my striations.
Womball, consider posting here the PDF I sent you with anatomy comments… mebbe help a fellow traveller?
Good Luck and keep goin!
Main thing is to get it to flow— if your goal is a flayed body then its pretty much a continuum, less lobulations to muscles-- at rest —
Remember everything is covered in thin fascia anyway. Think about a field-dressed deer…

I’m not sure if this uploaded correctly. I can finally see what it was on this other computer though. THe popups were all opaque so I couldn’t see my model. But they are transparent on this computer I’m typing from.
What are the mouth quads? And since the lats are smaller they should be further down? The platisma attaches under the chin, but not over it? I am going to get right to work on the next update so hopefully I can hammer that out in 2 or 3 days.
I reworked most of the suggestions that Art4Med gave me. Unfortunately I lost some work due to a zbrush crash, and my texture map was at the time disabled. When I retrieved the file I had lost my color map. I did take some pictures of steak today so that should help I think. I will see if I can collect tuna steak photos too. I’m going on vacation tomorrow for a week, so no updates for awhile. But I’m open to any paintover or suggestions. That pdf was pretty cool, very useful.

Looks gret, sorry to hear of crashes, etc. You’ve done well, grasshopper.
I’m upgrading to 2 gigs of ram, so I should be able to start adding striations in a couple of days. My computer is in the shop now. I just have to add 2 more muscles to the forearm and finish up the feet. And tweak the body a lot more. small_orange_diamond:)
I have some high resolution images of red meat steak for the color map. It does’t have nice striations so maybe parts of tuna steak can be use for that. What color are tendons? Can white meat grilled chicken breast (slices) be accurate for the colors and textures? Would the bone be textured with lots of little holes in it or should be smooth like has a material directly over it, and than a wet map applied to the skull parts?
Also I’m still not sure about this quad muscle, does it underlay the mentalis of the chin?
Sorry, Womball,
There’s been a misunderstanding— when I mentioned tuna steak, it was only to encourage the experience an SSS= sub-surface scatter IRL.
Other than that, the steak on the scanner worked wonders in 1994, maybe over-the-top today… look at other muscle textures, incl some site-galleries of contribs in this thread and see how the muscles can flow together-- esp if one wishes to appear raw.
[If wanting to appear like a cadaver, then paint it all brown and dry it out (LOL!)]
As to the bone, it indeed has a texture to it, but only a few holes would do fine. Think “lightning-fused sand with pinholes.” The bigger holes would do if you run a bump map.
The quadratus is really just a portion of the platysma muscle to the corners of the mouth, you could ignore it if you liked— just like the risorius = much ado about nothing.
BTW, the mouth muscles converge at what’s called the modiolus, just lateral to the actual corner of the mouth… if you think about it, that makes sense in animation rigging… and the nasolabial fold goes thru it.
As far as a wet map (everything is wet)— remember to make the fascia on the top of the head (Galea) connect those frontalis and occipitalis m’s. Check out the procedure on the Samburu Warrior at http://www.zbrushcentral.com/zbc/showthread.php?t=036891
