When drawing on the canvas and you click the grey area it rotates the model. Is it possible to lock the Y axis so while I’m drawing I can walk around the model in a straight line?
That’s what the gyro is for. If you activate it with Rotate selected, then the rings correspond to each of the planes that the model can rotate on. Dragging a ring will rotate the model around the axis that the ring circumscribes.
Not quite what I was looking for. I want to lock the axis while in edit mode. Similar how you can invoke axis symmetry from the keyboard, it would be nice to lock the axis with a keyboard shortcut.
Another thing that’s probably not quite what you’re looking for, but worth mentioning is that in the Transform palette you have controls to lock editing to a particular axis. By default, Transform>Modifiers>Xyz is active, meaning that the model can be edited in any direction. But if you turn it off you can control the switches next to it to choose the editable axis or axes.
Also, the Spin and Rotate buttons on the right shelf should be kept in mind. Rotate will rotate the object relative to the canvas and is the same as if you click and drag on the canvas. Spin will rotate the model based upon its local coordinates. Dragging left and right will spin the model around its Z axis. Other directions will change the orientation of the model. The Transform>Zspinner menu can also be used to automatically rotate the model around the Z axis.

Actually, that’s exactly what I’m looking for. Except, I want to lock an axis for when dragging on an empty spot on the canvas.
