Lava man

Hello

I’m working on a character for a mod game project. A man made of lava and volcanic ash.

-Any- tips, critiques, comments will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

A quick concept

Interesting start! :+1:

Does your concept call for a somewhat brutish appearance? If not, going the other way, with a very delicate structure might be an interesting avenue to pursue! Especially when considering the raw-powered, elemental nature of the “habitat”. Just an idea, but keep posting!

grate work nice loop on base mesh and grate concept art

This looks promising, the base mesh looks good.

…heh the right profile looks funny.:o

LOL

OK…, some work in ZB3

Nice start!
keep posting!

Rock sketch, I have this on a separate layer.

Just playing around with transpose…

And it looks like you can’t have layers on separate subdivision levels for some reason.

I put a layer on one level, and when moving to the others, the layers option is unavailable / darkened.

Is there a way around this anybody know about?

You can created multiple layers on multiple subdiv levels. Simply deactivate the receiving layer (not need to Hide the layer, just click on the layer name to deactivate it) then switch to another subdiv level and you will be able to create a new layer.
Any layer that has been created will contain all the changes applied to its subdiv level and all the lower subdiv levels. Example: If you create a layer at subdiv 5, it will contain all the deformation for layers 1,2,3,4 and 5 but not for layer 6 and above.

Alllllright!

I thought that was odd.

Thanks a lot

Here I am refining the rock formations.

grate work buddy grate update and grate details

The lava rocks have a lot of detail missing still, it should almost be like an old person’s skin. Never tried doing something like this before.

thanks for the comments.

Here is a turntable render.

nice job up to date, gabe.

why don’t you try to use some rocks for elbows and knees? it could help to add more detail and define different parts of the mesh.

I think lava flow doesn’t resemble old person’ skin, it reminds me some kind of high viscosity fluid with some solid parts, not completely mixed… don’t know how to explain…anyway, hope it helps

Check some images of cooled lava to see what I mean.

There are a lot of folds and wrinkles in it.

Indeed , when it gets cooler, grey’ish , it still tries to flow , but can’t as good anymore , so it creates folds and wrinkles.

yep, you’re right, gabe, folds and wrinkles and cracks…

have you tried to detail it with the gravity option? it’s used to get that effect.

give it a try, I’m sure it won’t disappoint you

Haven’t tried that one, but I will now that you mention it.

I’ve been using the clay tubes brush.

I’m adding extra detail to the cooled lava sections now.

So far I’ve only worked the legs.

Really detailed and great looking. Bravo.

This is looking good! BTW, there is a kinda Lava shader someone posted:
