Knoppix 3.6 Released

http://www.knoppix.net/

The above link is for a Complete Debian linux system that boots from a CD, and requires no hard drive installation…

all you have to do is possibly switch your computers boot sequence to boot from the CD rom before it looks at the hard drive…

then just put the CD in the drive, and re-boot your system…
1 1/2 minuets later you will be sitting behind a Linux Box in a full blown KDE enviornment (can use Fluxbox, and IceWM also from boot commandline)

It will look at your network cards and run DHCP program on them to auto detect your IP, and eneables it so you are online instantly…

Why would you need something like this?

:small_blue_diamond: its cool!

:small_blue_diamond: you want to try linux, but dont want to re-partition your hard drive jut to try it out…

:small_blue_diamond: to install Debian on your machieen, and be able to surf the net or play games while it installs the opperating system (try that with a windows install LOL! )

:red_circle: TO recover Files after windows fails to boot:
A while ago, I screwed up my Master boot record installing Fedora Core 2, there was no way to repair it and keep my data in the windows partition… somehow it crunched a bunch of windows system files, and would not let me boot… it would not even let me go into the file system from a windows XP cd Dos command line…

It looked like all my data was lost, Then i remembered that I had this Knoppix Live CD…

Knoppix has a tweak so you can read and write to a windows NTFS partition…

I booted up knoppix and within 2 minuets I was listening to my favorite internet music station, and Burning my data to CD!!!

Knoppix comes with a few tools for burning CD’s and DVD’s, so I was able to save all my files :sunglasses: :+1:

THEN after I re-installed windows I found out that I needed drivers for my network card to be able to get on the internet!!!
After calling dell, they tell me that it will cost me 25$ for them to burn it to CD and ship it to me… or I could just download it for free…

Once again Knoppix to the rescue!!! I was able to get on the dell website, and download a file right to my windows desktop!

WEll enough about me!

Knoppix also has a feature called a presistant home… it will allow you to save all your settings, so on next CD boot you can have you Email already set up, and all your wallpapers and stuff will be there :D:+1:

I think every computer manufacturer should include one of thease recovery CD’s with a computer purchace…
Windows CD is useless untill you get it installed.
Knoppix can save the day in many circumstances…

BTW, if you are planning on installing Debian, there is an easyer way, it uses the same Live CD technology but makes a perfect hard drive install…
it is easyer than SUSE or Fedora to set up hardware… it is all done by scripts…
you just run the script, and sit back while it preforms everything for you… This is the only way I know of to use the ATI drivers with the new linux kernel and the newest version of XFree86.
Kanotix also uses the newest version of KDE, wich is breath takeing if you are comeing from windows XP. Lots of control, and lots of COOL effects :D:+1:
