Is there a way to reduce polygon count with dynamesh? Answered.

In Sculptris there are tools to reduce the polygon count of an object both globally and with a brush. I’m wondering if there might be a way to also do this with a dynamesh object while the dynamesh function is still active. If I turn off dynamesh and then use Decimation Master I can of course reduce the polygons but when I turn dynamesh back on it converts it back to mainly quads and the polygon count is pretty much back to where it was. I know I could retopoligize the model but I was hoping for something much quicker than that. Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

Is there some reason you cant just remesh at a lower resolution (reduce the dynamesh resolution slider)?

Excellent solution for my needs - I hadn’t used that function before. Thanks for the tip. Actually I did try the dynamesh slider and it didn’t work to reduce the current object but your suggestion made me think of using the remesh function and its slider in the sub-tool palette. That did what I wanted and I could do this all while the dynamesh was still active. This allows me to try out new variations on a theme - starting at a much lower resolution so it will postpone getting too high resolution so quickly.

Dynamesh won’t update the mesh unless theres something to update, or unless you’ve changed a setting that forces an update like blur. If youve been working on the mesh (moving verts), it will remesh into the new resolution.

If you’ve just remeshed, then there’s nothing to update, so it wont change the resolution, but in that case it’s a simple matter to simply ctrl-z back and redo the meshing process until you get the result you want.

If for some reason you find yourself in a situation outside the above, make a light, inconsequential brush stroke on the mesh and it will remesh.

I now see what you are saying and of course that makes sense. This will be an even better way to go, thanks again.
