Intergalactic Shaman – Sinjuno aka - Snorkels

This is a new piece I made for fun. It is part of my Intergalactic Shaman series. Maya, Zbrush, Photoshop and mental ray were used to create it. I learned a lot making it but also had some struggles. Feel free to crit and comment.

Intergalactic Shaman – Sinjuno aka - Snorkels

Snorkels is the next being to arrive at the Conference of Intergalactic Shaman.

Snorkels is from the merged galaxies Earthlings know as NGC 3314.

This shaman’s specialty is healing through the mushroom. The dung they grow their mushrooms in is packed into an iron shell, which is held in place through magnetism in the top portion of the headdress. The headdress then acts as a psychic bridge between the shaman and the mushroom. Just as human software programmers’ design software, Snorkels can program his healing intentions and visions into the mushroom through the headdress, using his mind.

The mushrooms, which are also intelligent beings, are able to take this information and store it in their DNA code. This inputted information from the shaman can then be imbedded into the mushrooms spore print so the next time that mushroom strain is grown, it will contain the visions, thoughts and intentions of the previous shaman… and all other shaman that “programmed” the spores before that. This cycle has been happening for millennia with shamans all around the Universe who also use this technique for healing. Spore prints have been exchanged between Snorkels species since the beginning of their time, so you can only imagine the knowledge contained within the mushroom. They can program the mushrooms to do specific tasks. For example, if someone is in need of a certain kind of psychic therapy, Snorkels can program a custom batch of mushrooms with the needed remedy.

This is a very interesting and advanced form of shamanism. But the shaman is not the only provider of intelligence in this symbiotic relationship, the mushrooms they work with are millions of years older than Snorkels and his species, and they also contain galactic wisdom and vision. They have taught Snorkels and his species much of the ancient wisdom they know.

Snorkels lineage is actually responsible for programming the psychedelic mushrooms found here on Earth. Many moons ago they sent out billions of spore prints around the galaxy as a means to share their art, intelligence, thoughts and emotions with any curious galactic critters that might stumble upon them.

Nice and original. The only crit I have is that the background is not creating a contrast. The entire image seems to blurr together. Maybe chose a complimentary color to the characters tone. Keep that dark and your character should almost pop out in 3D…
Lemo :+1:

I agree with the above comments - you might also want to give the skin some specularity - a light wetness - that always helps - just dont over do it:).

Aha, thanks guys. I should have gone with my initial hunch, I had a soft orange color on the background wall and then opted for blue instead. I will do a quick remix.

As for the specularity, I chose to use an HDRI I made to light this scene and for some reason all the spec on the SSS shader vanished. If I used a spot light it was there, but my spec map and secondary spec map are not showing up with this light set up. Not sure why. Maybe I will add a subtle spot light to the scene to bring some of it back.

Thanks again,

f~

If you use IBL (ImageBasedLighting)do not forget to have an environment map or spherical image for your reflections. If not… you have IBL but limitless blackness for your spec and reflections etc. Try and place a large plane with a flat image behind the camera facing your object. Maybe just in the luminance channel of that mat for that plane so it’s not subject to lighting.
just some thoughts.
Lemo

Thanks. I will try that.
I just ordered Digital Lighting and Rendering by Jeremy Birn to hopefully help me with my lighting skills.

It’s a really wonderful concept and sculpt! Gorgeous. :+1:

Thanks guys.

I tried to bring back a bit of the spec by adding a subtle spot light to the scene and updated the image.

I can’t wait to get that book on lighting. Such an important part of CG

lemonnado - cool looking tutorials and cool artwork. Thanks for burning a hole in my monitor.

hosch - nice site and I like the architectural rendering you have there. Look forward to seeing those “coming soon” signs replaced with imagery

eric - thank you. your art is awesome as well. The light ship and your sketches are really good.

fidget - I appreciate your comments about the site I am slowly working on my site as I get time, I have over 25k of stills and animation frames to choose from, but they are all under NDA so I am slowly but surely changing select ones so the meet prearranged contract requirements so I can include them in my personal portfolio - i will get there i promise, lol. Have even banned myself from any and all games until i get it done, lol. Keep up the great work on your sculpting - looking forward to seeing much more:).
