I can't get brush strokes or alpha strokes to go deeper (engrave) into the surface.

Hello everyone. I have tried adjusting things like Z intensity and even playing with the “brush” drop down settings and I can’t seem to get my brush strokes and especially my Alphas to “engrave” or dig deeper into the surface. I always want my Focal shift at -100 for flatness and I have non gradient alphas. What settings do I change to simply get my strokes to dig deeper into the surface, please?

Thanks.

Zadd and Zsub are the only things that effect your depth.

You have a few options to increase the distance after the fact though.

I would recommend looking in to using layers as those can be driven beyond a simple 0-1

Thanks for the information but I guess I’m too new to understand how layers would help me achieve deeper lines. I assume that if I were to make the same “stroke” twice in the same spot… one on each layer… that will make it deeper? I fail to see how i can do that since one thing I’ve noticed about Zbrush so far is that I can’t even tell if it’s possible to center your strokes exactly in the same spot.

When you select the “brush” drop down settings… there is a setting for “depth”. Does this depth not refer to how deep your “add” or “subtract” goes?

The reason I need to make deep lines is because when I 3d Print my objects… lines that seem to be visible on Zbrush are not really deep enough in real life when you print them out.

You wouldn’t need to duplicate strokes on different layers. Each layer has its own Intensity value that can go well beyond the default strength of 1. So record your strokes on a layer, and then crank that higher to make the layer displace the model even more.

Thanks, sounds promising. I guess I’ll look to see if there are any Pixologic videos on how to use layers. I haven’t tried any of that yet. Thank you for the tips guys.

The Brush>Depth>Imbed slider affects how deep a brush stroke is - the maximum is 100.

Look at Marcus, bringing knowledge to the huddled masses.

Thanks Marcus. I’ll try it and report.

Yep… Marcus was spot on. I simply had to only change the inbed slider and it worked like a charm. Thank you thank you thank you.

I had a feeling those settings would help but I guess I kept changing the wrong depth sliders.
