I cannot edit this subtool (model) anytime I load it.... please help me.

I’m new to Zbrush but have learned a lot in a few weeks.

I created this ring, and there is some kind of problem now that whenever I try to load the tool fresh, I can’t go into “Edit Mode”. I am fully aware that normally, you must just click one subtool onto the document screen then immediately click “edit” But I can’t even do that with this file. It will created dozens of the same ring from just one click.

There was a glitch too that whenever I try to drop the tool into my new Zbrush document screen, it creates tons of them from one click! I’m attaching the file if someone can please fix the file so that I can edit it.

I wonder if the original problem stems from the fact that I had 35 million points, but I was able to decimate this down to 1.9 million. I also think I have two rings on one file.

I only need one ring and the one with 1.9 million points instead of 37 million.

I have tried “initializing Zbrush” but this did not help. I think the file or subtool itself has a problem. Can you please help check it and tell me how to fix it?

Any help will be extremely, extremely appreciated, please.

Here is a link to the ring (if there are two of them, we can delete one)

Hey Rick, yeah the tool is bugged, but you can get it back.

In Tools Menu, click Clone, and switch to the clone, then it will be editable.

Ok thank you. So do you mean after I hit clone, there will be a second one to use in the Subtools menu? Also, how to I delete the second ring that is seen on the document?

Thanks.

The new clone will be in yours Tools list, as a new duplicate of your original subtool icon.

After you’ve switched to the new cloned ring, and confirm it’s editable, you can switch back to the original, and in the Subtools menu, just click the Delete button, and it will be gone forever. Then switch back.

Though if you save the new clone as a ZTL file, then only that will appear next time you open Zbrush.
Unless you save it as a project (ZPR file), in this case delete as I mentioned above to permanently remove it.

I couldn’t figure out how to pick the clone or I still could not edit the clone.

I’m not even sure.

But… I exported the ring, and then imported it and it’s editable so I think I’m OK now.

I think what you did was accidentally hit Shift+S which puts a snapshot of the subtool on the canvas in 2.5D mode and can no longer be edited. If you do it again, just press Ctrl+N to clear the canvas and you will be good to go. I’m guessing you were opening a project file (File > Open) which keeps whatever you have on the canvas. That’s why it was still there when you opened the file. If you saved the ZTool (Tool > Save As), it doesn’t save snapshots to the canvas. Just the editable 3D Tool.

Thanks but control n never worked, I tried that before. Does the file I linked work for you? It’s in the first post. And exporting importing changed my mesh so I just made a new ring. Thanks though.

I just tried the ZTL and it is definitely corrupted. I have never seen something like this before. It’s like it’s stuck in 2.5D mode. Also the clone really slows down ZBrush and at 1.8 mil points should not be doing that. Making a new one was probably your best bet.

If you followed what I said, you’ll have a new editable version of your ring, not it’s evil twin :evil:small_orange_diamond:D

Cloning makes a duplicate in your Tools List, not your Subtools list, sorry I should have made that clearer
