Hello all: When I import a grayscale heightmap (such as a face) as an alpha into ZBrush and use it with the DragRectangle brush to create 3D image on a flat surface, the result is always rough, even though the original alpha image is VERY SMOOTH. I use Dynamesh set to a high resolution, etc. etc. but the resulting image is always roughish. What’s the trick to get a smooth result that reflects the smoothness of the original alpha image? You can see the result that I get using Dynamesh of 512.
Hello @Huertaaj
You didn’t mention what type of image file you are using. For best results, alpha’s should be 16 bit grayscale PSD (Photoshop Document) files. Unless it’s really high quality, converting a JPG file to 16 bit grayscale usually doesn’t work well. Also, Dynamesh is used generally for creating quick rough shapes. You might get better results using clean geometry (square poly’s) then subdividing to get the resolution you need.
The original grayscale alpha JPG says it is 24 bit and 850 x 850 pixels. Here is the alpha image below. It looks totally smooth with no obvious squares as shown in the earlier image that I posted.
I’m not sure what you mean by saying “You might get better results using clean geometry (square poly’s) then subdividing to get the resolution you need”. I need to convert a grayscale image to 3D and not sure what procedure you are suggesting. Can you elaborate a little? Thanks!
