How to set up image plane

Hi, been trying this awhile but cant seem to find any quality tutorials?

I am completely new to zbrush. I want to set up an image plane and model from that as reference.

I am using zbrush 3.5r2

Can anyone suggest/offer advice to a tutorial on this matter?

Please and thanks yous!

First upgrade to 3.5 R3 (free for registered users). Included with the installation is the Image Plane plugin which makes it easy to set up a reference image as a background for modeling.

Thanks!

Ok so I am trying to follow along with this tutorial here:

Tutorial:ZProject and Adjusting Photo Reference

(EDIT: I didnt realise you wrote it! Its a great plugin!!)

And I have downloaded image plane 3…however I am stuck on part 1

When it says:

“Select the subtool you want to polypaint and in the Tool:Texture subpalette, press Disable UVs and turn on Colorize.”

I cant find those buttons in 3.5r3

Is there a more uptodate version or what am I doing wrong?

THANKS!

I’m glad you like the plugin.

The tutorial was written for an earlier version of ZBrush (and needs updating!). However it will work fine with 3.5 R3 with only a couple of minor changes:

Stage 1. Select the subtool you want to polypaint and in the Tool:Polypaint subpalette, and turn on Colorize.

Stage 3. The texture will already be applied to the Plane3D.

Stage 6. There’s no longer any need to worry about offset when using the ZProject brush.

Otherwise the instructions should be good for 3.5. If you run into any more issues, let me know.

HTH,

I’ve updated the tutorial to reflect the 3.5 R3 layout. I think everything should be OK now but if it isn’t let me know!

Thanks,

Hi thanks thats great…I just had 1 minute to play around with it and I just thought I would throw this question into the mix.

When you are working from a photo, if you move your model, it obviously goes out of sync with your picture,

Is there any way of doing like an orthogonal way of modeling?

Thanks again, will follow the tutorial through tomorrow…

The tutorial you refer to is for texturing a finished model rather than modeling to match the photo reference.

To model from a photo you can use the Image Plane plugin. The simplest way is to start with the PolySphere that is loaded at startup:

  1. With the PolySphere in Edit mode (all ready for sculpting) press the Image Plane>Load Image button.

  2. Select the photo you want to use as your reference image.

  3. The photo will be loaded behind the sphere.

  4. You can now sculpt the sphere to match the photo.

  5. Use the Image Plane>Model Opacity slider to make the sphere transparent so you can see the photo through it.

  6. Use the Image Plane>Store and RePos buttons to store and recall the model position. This means you can rotate the model to check progress then reset back to the modeling position.

Note: for modeling in Ortho mode make sure Perspective is off (hotkey P or the Draw>Perspective button).

HTH,

Thanks again…some top tips, I will get on the case :+1:
