How to remove asymmetrical surface artifacts

I’ve got a couple areas on my model where there are some strange bits of smoothing going on and I can’t account for. I think I would have noticed if I had caused these, but I’m not sure what ZBrush functions I’ve performed on this that may have caused this. I had set down this project for a while, so I don’t recall my operations “history” on it anymore. Here are the offenders:

The main issues are all on the left side of the face: the small crease near his nose, the corruption around the corner of his mouth, and the weird little projection along the edge of his ear. You’ll probably notice a couple other minor asymmetrical bits that are clearly not intentional, and I was hoping fixing these other bits would correct those as well.

I’ve tried masking the right side of his face (his right) and using ReSym and Smart ReSym from the Deformation tab, which, by their descriptions, sound like the best method to use. But it only makes the issue worse. It makes the model looks like some old chipped statue or the victim of some crazed slasher, respectively.

I’d love any suggestions you all can offer.

  1. Go to level 1 of your model.
  2. Drag a mask to cover the good side.
  3. Use the Smart ReSym deformation. Make sure to set the axis indicator to match that of your model’s symmetry.
  4. Go to level 2 and do Smart ReSym again.
  5. Keep going up one level at a time, applying Smart ReSym each time, until you’ve done so at all levels.

Your model should now be just fine.

The reason you apply the deformation at all subdivision levels starting at the lowest is that it’s easier for ZBrush to make the side-to-side comparison accurately when lower levels are already in symmetry. Basically, it helps ZBrush find the correct points that match up across the mesh.

Fantastic! That did it! Thanks for the quick and helpful reply!

You can also use ‘Mirror And Weld’ in ‘Tool > Geometry > Modify Topology’.

Knowing multiple methods to solve an issue never hurts. Thanks!
