How to preserve edges when smoothing

  1. Want to sculpt in fine details a part of human character (not the whole)
  2. Then want to bring it back into Maya so as to combine with remaining body
  3. But in ZBrush when we smooth (subdivide) the border edge shifts.

Please suggest a way so that border edge is preserved while we sculpt the remaining model.

Turn off smoothing when you subD

Thanks.

But that would effect the entire mesh.

Want the mesh to get smoothed but the Border Edges to remain intact.

Is it possible?

You could duplicate the mesh and subdivide both with the same number of subdivisions but one of them with smooth on and the other off.
Save the higher subdivision of the smooth off as obj. Do a morph target in the higher subdivision of the one with subdivision on. Create a layer in that subdivision and import the obj. Swap the morph in the morph menu.
Now you can blend both versions as you want. You can use the morph bush or mask the edges with mask border menu and use the morph slide. This allows you to recover your hard edge and blend it.

Thank you for the info. I was having the same issue, and your solution worked.
