Hi, I am new to zbrush and would like to know the ways to paint and draw freehand with zbrush
First of all, you probably want to use RGB, rather than using a MRGB setting…This will mean you are using only color, rather than a material…You probably would want to also turn off ZAdd. (If you leave ZAdd on, however, you can get a thick, oil-painting type effect.)
You can also use ‘Flat Color’ material, and lighting won’t effect your image.
Varying the RGB intensity will allow you to build up color slowly…
Now the key point…Try what I’ve said, then disregard what I said afterward, and see what happens, say with ZAdd on, MRGB selected, etc. In other words, this is a guide, not rigid rules…
Here’s a little watercolor play I did last week…
This was done using an Alpha brush for the ‘Mandela’, (Thanx Glen…), with the Alpha brush converted to a stencil, and tiled to create all the mandela shapes at once…If you email me with specifics, regarding what you want to do, I’ll make you a tutorial script to explain watercolor, and oil-painting techniques…
Welcom aboard Spook! Is question about freehand work in ZBrush or Watercoloring in ZBrush? You question doesn’t seem to fit your topic??
wow stonecutter, no wonder you favor the paintings… you’re so good at it! Nicely done!
very top icon that says (stroke) chose that then chose (freehand)

Weena I had to post this after your comment…I found it funny 'cause I usually model rather than paint…This was a weekend before last quicky…
aha! Then I did misunderstand about what you said about getting rid of MAYA and 3DMax… sorry! :o
Anyway… thanks for all the great tips
This thread absolutely inspired me to go a little nuts and create a set of 9 watercolor alphas in PSD format. (It would had been 12, but I had to keep the size under 500 KB) To use them, more or less go by Stonecutter’s instructions. But I do recommend using the Dots stroke seem to work the best with the alpha brushes.
I’m still new to Zbrush, but I’m envisioning a Zscript similar to Zketchpad.
Enjoy!
nice of you yiffer - thanks! i love painting in z…
thanks yiffer…gonna have to check em out!
Yiffer,
Those are very nice alphas, thanks!
I’ve been playing with watercolor effects a little myself recently. Here’s a little setup zscript for you to try that will maybe give you some ideas. (The zscript code is included so that you can see what the settings are.) Just load the ‘watercolor.txt’ file using the ZScript>Load button. I’ve used one of your excellent alphas in the zscript - it’s included in the zip so that there won’t be an error on loading.
The ‘dry brush’ works best at Draw Sizes below about 50.
Have fun,
heya marcus, that’s cool… U know, what I see?
You would/should/will write one script named “marcus-watercolor-mania”, and there are the possibilities to change/load alphas and backgrounds(roughnes/canvas/ “on fly”, like zketchpad
Thank you for posting and ideas
marcus,
I second the notion. I didn’t know the Zbrush was even capable of the brush effects demonstrated by your script. Very cool stuff!
Thanks Abyssis,
I might develop this further, if I have time. With a tablet and pen, you really get quite the feel of a brush and watercolor. ZBrush is wonderful in that there are so many settings to play with and then you can use a zscript to make it all automatic!
Cheers,
Thanks Yiffer,
Perhaps I’d better say ‘watch this space’…
Cheers,
