how to mask full strength

How do I draw a 100% strength line as a mask? And otherwise control the strength level?

I’d like to draw a thin and sharp masking line. When I hold down the command button (I’m using a mac) to paint a mask, it ends up painting with a variable strength. I did read that masking has 256 levels.

I’ve tried choosing different brushes and alphas for the stroke. Intensity in the masking palette is set to 100%

I’m a new ZBrush user, and very much looking forward to v4 for Mac!! Thanks, Cindy

I’m guessing that you’re using a tablet. It sounds like what is happening is that the intensity of the mask is being controlled by the tablet pressure. You’ll need to adjust your settings in the Preferences>Tablet menu.

If you run into this often you can easily create macros for changing the settings to and from what you want for masking. Then you can even assign hotkeys to the macros so that you can make these changes with a single key press.

I’m having the same issue and question whether I use the mouse or the Intuos 4 tablet at any of it’s adjustable settings. I kept the Wacom control panel open while in ZBrush, so I could experiment with the different settings. If I put the pen’s threshold and sensitivity on it’s lowest setting, I get 100% pressure easily with the tablet, but I still can’t get a dark masking line in zBrush.

Is there a way to control the 256 levels of masking in zBrush?

Just tried it again with my mouse. Let’s say I’m starting fresh, and bring in the 3d sphere tool, make it a polymesh, and divide it up to level 4. If my brush is wide (64 drawsize), most of the mark is 100% masked, but the intensity of the edges are feathered. The SharpenMask button won’t turn every pixol that is masked to 100% strength.

What I want to do is draw a thin line (small draw size) and have every pixol(polygon face?) that gets masked to be 100%.

Thanks for your help. Cindy

Zbrush painting resolution on Ztools are depende on number of subdivisions.
So you have to divide your tool some more and try to paint thin line mask.

After draw the required line, press Ctrl and Alt (in windows, you use as per mac)
and click on any other place to narrow the smudging fron edges. U can use 2 or 3 times for very sharp edges.

thank you :)) I did get a better result this time with a higher subdivision. Is the Ctrl + Alt a shortcut for SharpenMask?

Also, this time that worked brilliantly, but it does seem that often I have to quit the program and relaunch it to get it to do something the way I understand it should. I’m pretty new with ZBrush, so don’t always know whether to attribute something to ignorance or ZBrush 3.2’s stability with my newish Mac.

I love controlled detail, so I’ve really studied alphas, stencils, and masking.

Aurick, you said "If you run into this often you can easily create macros for changing the settings to and from what you want for masking. Then you can even assign hotkeys to the macros so that you can make these changes with a single key press.

Create macros in zBrush or the Wacom control panel? I’d like to do that. How do you do it? :))) Cindy

Macros are created in ZBrush and can be used to automate anything you do repetitively. They are explained here: http://www.pixologic.com/docs/index.php/Macros

To create a hotkey for them, simply locate your macro in the Macro>Macros menu and add a hotkey like you would any other interface element.

thanks!
