How to insert an ear as a separate subtool without needing to brush it on top of a mesh?

Hi. How can I insert an ear as separate subtool without needing to brush it on top of my head sculpture? I wanted to insert an ear and dynamesh it with the head later when I have get finer details.

Also, anyone knows why chisel 3D brush gets all sparky when I try to use it with the spotlight on?

Either insert it directly into your mesh with an IM brush, a VDM brush, or model it as a separate subtool, then merge it together with the target subtool via one of the methods in the subtool palette. The ear mesh and the head mesh must be part of the same subtool in order to Dynamesh them together.

Or you could use Live Boolean to fuse the two subtools together into a new combined mesh non-destructively, then Dynamesh the resulting mesh.

Hi @renight0

That’s because you can also use Spotlight textures as an alpha to sculpt. So when you insert the Chisel3D object, it’s also adding the texture as an alpha. To bypass this, with the Chisel3D brush selected, go to “Brush > Samples” and turn off “Spotlight Projection”.

Hi @Spyndel, what I wanted to do is insert an ear with a brush directly as a subtool instead of having to use Chisel 3D blush somewhere on my head subtool and split the ear after (and leaving a hole where the ear was placed). I saw someone do this with an ear brush but can’t figure out.

It worked. Thanks :slight_smile:

@renight0

They probably used the “IMM BParts” brush. Select the ear in that brush and then draw it on the head. When you draw the ear on the head, it will mask the head. You would then go to “Subtool > Split” and click “Split Masked Points”. That will make the head and ear seperate subtools.

Are you viewing the provided links in blue? The documentation on the IM brush linked above should have explained this.

It worked exactly as I saw in a video. Thank you!

Yes. I didn’t find what I was specifically trying to do. But I didn’t know there was difference in Chisel 3D and IMM Bparts. I hadn’t even tried it before. IMM Bparts work exactly the way I wanted!
