How to enter Edit mode aftear opening a document?

I’m very happy with ZBrush, there’s just one thing that’s messing up my workflow.

I know it’s just because I"m a noob and I don’t know the right key to press or icon to click on.

The problem is, every time I open a Zbrush document I create, it opens in Draw mode and will not go into Edit mode.

The Edit button is grayed out, and not clickable.

When I click on the canvas, all it wants to do is draw the object that I opened. :frowning:

Any help for this would be greatly appreciated.

Attatched is an image of what I’m trying to work on. I saved it…Zbrush crashed and I opened again.

This happens every time I open a document.

Thanks!

sounds like you’re loading the document instead of the ztool?

when you exit zbrush and it asks if you want to save your document, it means whatever is on your canvas, as a 2.5d image

your ztool is the actual mesh you edited

When you save a Document (Document > Save As), you only save a 2.5D image of the canvas. There is no editable 3D content on it, which is why ‘Edit’ button is grayed out. If you want to save editable 3D content, you have to save as a Project file (File > Save As) or as a ZTool (Tool > Save As).

Thanks ZBer2, just one more question if I may…

Quite often when I use the “Scale,” “Zoom,” or “Rotate” tools on the right-hand side of the canvas, Zbrush duplicates the object I’m working on. What’s up with that? It’s very frustrating, as it seems as i there’s no way to delete the duplicate or undo the action.

Any help on this is greatly appreciated.

That hasn’t happened to me. It’s quite possible that you might have inadvertently hit Shift+S which will place a snapshot of the tool on the canvas. If it happens again, just turn off ‘Edit’ button (T), and hit Ctrl+N to clear the canvas then redraw the tool on the canvas again and enable ‘Edit’. Note: You won’t lose any work by clearing the canvas and redrawing the tool unless you are working on a 2.5D canvas.

Yes, that was it…TY!

Now I don’t have to start over with a blank canvas and redraw my tool every time. Thanks so much, guys…I’m learning a lot.

I can’t believe how easy Zbrush is to use once one learns the controls…it’s…wow.
