How to boolean with dynamesh? - Answered.

hi , Trying to learn dynamesh and im not having the best luck.

For some reason when i have 2 meshes together and " ctrl" Drag, nothing happens ?? also when i “insert mesh” it inserts a mesh on top of the first mesh then i cant move them apart??? its 2 meshes in 1 subtool.

pleassse help!!!

  • thanks!

Ctrl-drag wont work until you have activated Dynamesh. So choose the mesh you want to dynamesh, then press the dynamesh button. It will remesh the existing mesh. Subsequent re-meshes can be performed by Ctrl-Dragging in the canvas. Sometime Dynamesh won’t update if you have just remeshed and there is nothing to change. It will remesh again after you have made a stroke, or otherwise altered vert position.

When you insert a mesh with the insert tools, the original mesh is auto-masked, and you can move the inserted mesh with the transpose tools. You must clear the mask before re-meshing will occur.

thank you for your response!

how do you use the "insert mesh " tool.
The only thing i see is the insert head / ear / brush etc…
Ive tried the insert mesh near the dynamesh button but it seems to lay a mesh directly ontop of the first mesh and i cant move it around.

if i wanted to " boolean" 2 objects together, can i do that using dyanmesh or just the standard “remesh” option??

  1. Select Sphere 3d. Draw on canvas and enter edit mode. Make polymesh 3d (Tool>Make Polymesh 3d next to the clone button).

2)Select “Insert Cube” brush. Draw a cube into the surface of the sphere. Notice how the sphere becomes masked, allowing you to position the cube freely with the transpose or deformation tools.

3)Clear the mask by Ctrl-dragging in empty canvas, or ctrl-shift-A.

4)Press Dynamesh (Tool>Geometry>Dynamesh)

  1. Joy.

I’m sure you can take it from there.

Thought I’d add that, while the first ctrl+drag gets rid of the mask, a second ctrl+drag immediately after is required to activate the actual remesh. I read all the comments twice and didn’t see this mentioned. Perhaps it’s as simple as that? The rest is in Spyndel’s post, like being in edit mode with dynamesh mode turned on. Use Zadd to add, and Zsub to subtract prior to drawing an InsertMesh. InsertMesh brushes can be altered beyond the defaults too, under Brush:Modifiers.

Since Zedd brought it up, bonus tip: You can Ctrl-alt drag in empty canvas to get rid of the mask and remesh in one step. You still have to activate Dynamesh first.

thanks for the support! really do appreciate it!

Thanks for the tip, I did not know that. It’s great to still be learning new things after all this time. This is exactly why I love this place, such great people here!

Edit: Err, discovered a problem doing it both ways. If you subdivide the InsertMesh after drawing it, subtract doesn’t work and adds instead. Still useful though.
