How long does it take you to build a character?

Hey kids,

Just wondering, on average, how long does it take to complete a character for use in a game? Including retopo (manual), bakes, textures, but excluding rigging and animation.

I’m making my first character using zbrush and I’m almost 2 weeks in and still in the retopo stage. I feel like I’m lagging and would like to get an idea of a general time constraint to aim for.

Thanks!

I’m almost 2 weeks in

How much modeling experience do you have? I’m guessing not too much. I’m pretty sure some people could belt out a character in considerably less time(half that or less)

It depends on a lot of factors. 1 day for a simple character with autoretopo help. Weeks for highly detailed complex characters.

Actually, funny enough, I’ve got quite a bit of experience in modelling in 3dSMax. I work as a 3d artist for a mobile game developer. But, since most of that work is low-poly and unlit, I never really had a reason to explore zBrush. Now that phones can push a lot more polys/shaders, I figured it’d be a good idea to familiarize myself with zBrush.

That said, this is my first character ever in zBrush, so I’m spending half the time watching tutorials. It’s actually quite a bit different than traditional modeling tools, at least superficially. It’s taken some time just to break old habits.

I figure the next one one will go a lot faster

For me it takes at least thirty hours spread over two weeks to make a character from scratch, including texturing. I’m just a hobbyist so there is no need for me to rush things.

I’m still tweaking a model after 6 years!!
